• The slides, first and by a distance. Two full buckets of trash on a pair of slides is a lot of weight moving a lot of times, and slides are where pull-outs fail. Blum Blumotion is the benchmark.

The capacity point is the one that surprises people. A standard 35-quart pull-out bucket is roughly two thirds of a 13-gallon kitchen can, and in a dual-compartment unit each stream is about 4.4 gallons. You will empty it considerably more often. • Check the cabinet floor when you change the bag. A closed cabinet has no airflow, so anything that leaks sits there. Wipe it occasionally — this is the commonest source of a smell people blame on the bucket.
• Do not overfill. An overfull bucket catches on the cabinet frame on the way in, which is how the frame gets scored and the bag gets torn.
• Keep the wet fraction out. Same rule as anywhere, more so in an unventilated cabinet. A countertop caddy or the freezer.
• Tighten the slide fixings after six months. They loosen with use, and a loose slide is what starts the misalignment that eventually makes the drawer bind.
