Pull-Out & Slim Cans

The best trash cans for apartments

Five cans chosen for apartment constraints rather than suburban ones: a narrow footprint, a lid quiet enough for thin floors, and nothing that needs a drill. The top pick is the simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can.

The short answer

Buy the simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can if you want full 13-gallon-class capacity in a footprint narrow enough for a galley kitchen, and the simplehuman 30L Under-Counter Pull-Out if you can give up the cabinet under the sink. Apartment can shopping is a fit problem with two extra constraints attached: noise through the floor, and whether you are allowed to make holes.

Everything in this list is sized for a kitchen where the can has to live somewhere specific, not wherever you like. That changes the ranking - a wide can with a beautiful pedal is no use if the only free floor is eight inches between the counter end and the radiator.

The three constraints that make apartment cans different

There is no spare floor

Apartment kitchens are laid out to a plan that assumed the trash would go in a cabinet. Whatever you buy has to fit the gap that is actually free, and that gap is usually narrow and deep rather than square. Narrow-and-deep is a shape, and it is the shape to shop for - a slim can of the same capacity as a semi-round one takes up roughly two-thirds of the floor width.

Sound travels through structure

In a building with shared walls and thin floors, a lid that bangs is not just annoying to you. A damped lid is the single feature worth paying for here, and it matters more at 11pm than any spec on the box. If you want it silent, the quietest option in the category is a touch-lid or sensor can, because nothing is spring-loaded.

You probably cannot drill

Most pull-out cans mount with screws into the cabinet floor or side. In a rental that is either not allowed or not worth the deposit argument, which is why the freestanding bucket-on-a-frame approach matters. Renter-friendly under-sink cans covers the no-drill options in detail, including the ones that use the existing cabinet shelf.

The picks in full

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

01 — Best narrow full-size can

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

Full kitchen capacity in a can narrow enough to live in the gap beside a fridge or at the end of a run of cabinets.

Capacity
45 liters / 11.9 gallons
Shape
Slim — deep rather than wide
Lid
Soft-close

The trick is that the volume goes back rather than sideways — it is deep, not wide. If the only free floor space in your kitchen is a narrow slot, this is one of very few cans that gives you a genuine 45 liters there rather than forcing you down to a 30-liter bin.

What we'd flag: a narrow, deep can tips more easily than a wide one when the lid is open and you lean on it. Push it against a wall rather than leaving it free-standing.

simplehuman 30L Under-Counter Pull-Out Can

02 — Best single-bucket pull-out

simplehuman 30L Under-Counter Pull-Out Can

The single-bucket version, for a household that recycles elsewhere and wants all the cabinet volume for trash.

Capacity
30 liters / 8 gallons
Frame
Heavy-duty steel
Tracks
Commercial-grade ball bearing

A dual-compartment pull-out is the wrong product if your recycling goes into an outdoor crate — you end up with a half-size trash can for no reason. This gives you the full 30 liters in one bucket on the same heavy-duty steel frame and commercial ball-bearing tracks, hidden inside the cabinet.

What we'd flag: the same cabinet-depth constraint applies, and there is no way to add a second bucket later. Decide before you drill.

Stainless steel cans fail cosmetically long before they fail mechanically: a dent near the pedal and a permanent haze of fingerprints. A plastic body has neither problem, wipes clean properly, and is light enough to move with one hand while you mop.

What we'd flag: plastic scuffs, and over years in a sunny kitchen it discolors. It will look tired sooner than steel even though it will not dent.

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

04 — Best for a narrow gap

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

A seven-inch-wide steel step can with a soft-close lid and a liftable inner bucket, for the gap beside a desk or a vanity.

Capacity
2.6 gallons / 10 liters
Dimensions
13.3" D x 7" W x 14.2" H
Weight
4.5 lb empty
Lid
Soft-close, with a stay-open position
Bucket
Removable inner bucket
Material
Stainless steel

Small cans are chosen by footprint, not capacity, and almost every buying guide gets that backwards. This one is 7 inches wide and 13.3 deep, so it fills a gap a 13-gallon can cannot enter, and it still has the two things that make a can pleasant: a pedal, and a lid damped so it closes quietly rather than clapping. Push the lid back after stepping and it stays open for a cleaning job. The inner bucket lifts out, so emptying it does not mean carrying the whole can.

What we'd flag: 2.6 gallons is a two-day can for a kitchen, not a week's. Clorox's odor protection is a coating on the inner bucket surface rather than a filter, so it does nothing about what is in the bag — a small can stays sweet because you empty it, not because of the finish.

Amazon Basics 13.2 Gallon (50 L) Soft-Close Step Trash Can

05 — Best cheap soft-close

Amazon Basics 13.2 Gallon (50 L) Soft-Close Step Trash Can

The cheapest way to get a genuinely damped lid: a 50-liter brushed stainless step can with a removable inner bucket.

Capacity
13.2 gallons / 50 liters
Lid
Soft-close
Pedal
Foot lever
Inner bucket
Removable
Finish
Smudge-resistant brushed stainless
Dimensions
14.8" x 16.7" x 25.9"

A soft-close lid is the feature that decides whether a can is tolerable in an open-plan kitchen, and it is normally the first thing budget cans drop. This keeps it, adds a smudge-resistant finish so the fingerprints are less obvious, and uses a removable inner bucket so a leaked bag does not sit against the steel. It takes standard 13-gallon liners.

What we'd flag: the pedal has no published cycle rating, and no rating usually means the manufacturer does not want to print one. Treat this as a three-to-five year can rather than a ten-year one.

How we picked

We have not lived with all five in an apartment. What we did was rank published dimensions against the gaps that apartment kitchens actually leave, then weight lid mechanism and noise above capacity, then eliminate anything that requires a permanent fixing. Methodology, disclosure.

One of the five is a plastic-bodied sensor can, which looks like an odd choice next to four stainless and steel cans. It is there for a specific apartment reason: plastic does not dent in a tight kitchen where the can gets knocked, it does not show fingerprints in a room with no natural light, and the sensor lid makes no mechanical noise at all.

We excluded cans over about 15 gallons, outdoor carts, and anything with a compactor. Capacity is not the apartment problem, and a compactor means a heavier bag to carry down a stairwell.

What size can for an apartment

HouseholdKitchen canWhy
One person, studio4-8 gallonFills in 2-3 days; one trip to the chute
One person, one bedroom8-13 gallonStandard bags fit; a week of dry waste
Couple13 gallonThe default, if the floor space exists
Couple, galley kitchen13 gallon slimSame capacity, two-thirds the width
Share with 3-4 people13 gallon plus recyclingThe recycling stream is the bulky one
Any, with a basement dumpsterLarger is fineWeight matters less when there are no stairs

The number people get wrong is the small end. A 4-gallon can in a studio sounds right and then needs emptying nightly, which in a building with a single ground-floor dumpster is a real cost. If the carry is long, size up and empty less often; if the chute is close, size down and empty often - a can emptied daily smells better than a bigger one emptied every third day with the same waste in it.

The two shapes that fit the most apartment kitchens: a full-capacity slim can for a gap of about a foot, and a 6.5-inch-wide can for a gap you would not think could take a can at all.

The apartment-specific problems nobody warns you about

Odor with no cross-ventilation

Apartment kitchens often have one window and an extractor that vents into the room. That means odor stays, and the can is the most concentrated source in the apartment. A can with a filter housing in the lid is worth more here than in a house. Carbon filters, assessed honestly.

Fruit flies arrive from the building, not your kitchen

In a multi-unit building the drains and the chute are shared, so you can get fruit flies from a neighbour's waste. A fully seating lid does more than a clean kitchen in that situation. Trash can fruit flies.

Recycling rules you do not control

Buildings vary from full single-stream pickup to nothing. If your building sorts, you need two streams in a kitchen with room for one, and a dual-compartment can is the only sane answer. Dual-compartment cans.

The can has to come with you

Apartments get moved out of. A can that is screwed into a cabinet is a can you leave behind or spend an afternoon removing. That is an argument for freestanding, and it is why the slim can rather than the pull-out is our top pick despite the pull-out being the better use of space.

Common questions

What is the best trash can for an apartment?

The simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can. It holds just under 12 gallons in a narrow, deep footprint, the lid is damped so it does not bang through a shared floor, and it is freestanding, so it moves out when you do.

What size trash can is best for an apartment?

Eight to 13 gallons for most one- and two-person apartments. Go smaller only if the building's trash is a few steps away; go larger only if there is no stairwell between you and a dumpster.

Where do you put a trash can in a small apartment kitchen?

In order of preference: inside the sink cabinet on a pull-out or a freestanding frame, in the gap at the end of a counter run where the overhang gives the lid room, or beside the fridge if the fridge door does not swing into the lid.

Can you put a pull-out trash can in a rental?

Sometimes, but most mount with screws into the cabinet. The no-drill approach is a bucket on a freestanding frame that sits on the cabinet floor or hangs from the existing shelf, which leaves no holes behind.

How do you stop an apartment kitchen smelling of trash?

A lid that seats fully, a liner changed before it is full rather than after, and a carbon filter in the lid housing if the can has one. Apartment kitchens usually lack cross-ventilation, so containment matters more than it does in a house.

Is a touchless trash can good for an apartment?

Yes, for one specific reason: there is no spring and no pedal linkage, so it is the quietest option in a building with thin floors. The trade is batteries and a motor that can fail.
