Kitchen Trash Cans

The best small kitchen trash cans

Five cans for kitchens with no room for a 13-gallon. The top pick is the simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can - a full damped step mechanism at 4.2 gallons - and the rest are chosen on footprint rather than capacity.

The short answer

Buy the simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can if you want a real kitchen can at small scale - damped lid, steel pedal, 4.3 gallons - and the Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon if your gap is narrower than seven inches. Small kitchen cans are chosen by footprint, not by capacity, and almost every buying guide gets that backwards.

Best narrow small can

The reason to read on is that small covers two completely different problems. One is a kitchen with no floor space, where the can has to fit a gap between the counter and the fridge. The other is a kitchen that generates little waste, where a big can just means the trash sits longer. The first problem is solved by dimensions; the second is solved by emptying habits, and buying a tiny can for it usually backfires.

How we picked

We have not lived with all five of these. What we did was compare each manufacturer's published dimensions, lid mechanism and liner system, then rank on the constraint that actually binds in a small kitchen: how much floor the can occupies and whether the lid can open where you intend to put it. Methodology, disclosure.

The criteria, in the order they decided the ranking: width at the widest point, because that is the number that fails; whether the lid is damped, because a small can in a small kitchen is usually within earshot of everything; whether a standard bag fits or you are committed to a coded liner; whether the inner bucket lifts out, because small cans get wet; and whether the pedal mechanism is a real linkage or a sprung flap.

We excluded cabinet-mounted and pull-out units here. They are a better answer for a lot of small kitchens, but they are a different purchase with a different install - we cover them in pull-out and under-sink cans.

The picks in full

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

01 — Best small step can

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

A proper step can at 16 liters — damped lid, steel pedal, and a footprint that fits beside a dorm desk or under a counter.

Capacity
16 liters / 4.3 gallons
Lid
Soft-close, damped
Pedal
Steel
Body
Stainless steel

Small bins almost universally use a sprung flap that clacks and eventually stops latching. This is the same damped mechanism simplehuman puts in its kitchen cans, scaled down, which matters most in a room where you also sleep. Sixteen liters is about right for one person emptying twice a week, and the closed lid keeps the room's smell down between trips to the hall chute.

What we'd flag: simplehuman sizes its liners by code letter, and a generic bag in a can this small overhangs badly. Either buy the coded liner or accept the fold.

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

02 — Best for a narrow gap

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

A seven-inch-wide steel step can with a soft-close lid and a liftable inner bucket, for the gap beside a desk or a vanity.

Capacity
2.6 gallons / 10 liters
Dimensions
13.3" D x 7" W x 14.2" H
Weight
4.5 lb empty
Lid
Soft-close, with a stay-open position
Bucket
Removable inner bucket
Material
Stainless steel

Small cans are chosen by footprint, not capacity, and almost every buying guide gets that backwards. This one is 7 inches wide and 13.3 deep, so it fills a gap a 13-gallon can cannot enter, and it still has the two things that make a can pleasant: a pedal, and a lid damped so it closes quietly rather than clapping. Push the lid back after stepping and it stays open for a cleaning job. The inner bucket lifts out, so emptying it does not mean carrying the whole can.

What we'd flag: 2.6 gallons is a two-day can for a kitchen, not a week's. Clorox's odor protection is a coating on the inner bucket surface rather than a filter, so it does nothing about what is in the bag — a small can stays sweet because you empty it, not because of the finish.

simplehuman 15L Mini Recycler

03 — Best small dual bin

simplehuman 15L Mini Recycler

A two-compartment bin small enough for a studio kitchen, an office, or a bathroom that needs paper separated out.

Total capacity
15 liters / 4 gallons
Compartments
Two

Apartment kitchens rarely have room for a 58-liter recycler, and the usual fallback — a second loose bin shoved somewhere — is what makes small kitchens look chaotic. Fifteen liters split two ways is genuinely small, but it is sorted, lidded, and matches the rest of the range.

What we'd flag: at roughly 7.5 liters a side you will be emptying the recycling compartment every couple of days. This is a tidiness product, not a capacity one.

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

04 — Best narrow full-size can

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

Full kitchen capacity in a can narrow enough to live in the gap beside a fridge or at the end of a run of cabinets.

Capacity
45 liters / 11.9 gallons
Shape
Slim — deep rather than wide
Lid
Soft-close

The trick is that the volume goes back rather than sideways — it is deep, not wide. If the only free floor space in your kitchen is a narrow slot, this is one of very few cans that gives you a genuine 45 liters there rather than forcing you down to a 30-liter bin.

What we'd flag: a narrow, deep can tips more easily than a wide one when the lid is open and you lean on it. Push it against a wall rather than leaving it free-standing.

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

05 — Best narrow small can

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

Six and a half inches wide, which is the number that matters when the only space is between the toilet and the wall.

Capacity
2 gallons
Dimensions
13.5" x 6.5" x 13"
Material
Polypropylene
Handle
Integrated

Almost every small bin is round, and a round bin in a rectangular gap wastes most of it. This is a genuine slot-filler at 13.5" x 6.5" x 13", with rounded internal corners so liquid does not get trapped and an integrated handle so you can lift it out one-handed.

What we'd flag: no lid. In a bathroom that is usually fine; anywhere food goes, it is not.

Measure the gap, not the can

The single most common return in this category is a can that fits the floor but not the opening. Three measurements decide it, and the third is the one people forget.

  1. Width of the gap at its narrowest point. Baseboards, door casings and the fridge door hinge all steal an inch you measured at eye level but do not have at floor level.
  2. Depth from the wall to the leading edge. A can that protrudes past the counter line gets kicked, and a can that gets kicked slides. Round cans waste the corners; rectangular cans use them.
  3. Clearance above the lid. A step can needs the lid to swing up. Under a counter overhang or a wall cabinet, a can that is 25 inches tall with a 10-inch lid arc needs 35 inches of air, not 25.

If the gap is genuinely narrow - under seven inches - you are in slim-can territory rather than small-can territory, and the shapes change. Slim and narrow cans, measured.

What you give up at small capacity

Bag fit gets worse, not better

A 4-gallon can and a 13-gallon can both take whatever bag you own, but the small one looks wrong doing it. Tall kitchen bags overhang a small can by six inches or more, and the overhang is what catches on the lid and drops the bag into the bucket. The fix is either a correctly sized bag - 4 to 8 gallon - or a can with a liner pocket that hides the excess. Why your trash bag does not fit.

Odor arrives sooner, in a way

A small can does not smell more per unit of waste, but it does fill faster, and filling faster means the waste at the bottom has usually been there longer by the time you notice. The compensation is that emptying a small can is trivial - a 4-gallon bag weighs nothing. Small cans reward the habit of emptying on a schedule rather than when full.

Recycling has nowhere to go

This is the real cost. In a small kitchen the landfill can and the recycling can are competing for the same square foot of floor, and the usual outcome is that recycling loses and everything goes in one bin. A mini recycler with two compartments is a better answer than two separate small cans, which is why one is in the list above.

Cheap small cans use a flap, not a pedal

At the bottom of the market a step can is often a sprung plastic flap on a plastic pin. It works for a few months, then the latch stops catching and the lid rests ajar. If the can is going in a room where you can hear it, the damped mechanisms are the whole reason to spend more.

Where to put it when there is nowhere to put it

Four placements work in a small kitchen, roughly in order of how well they work: inside the sink cabinet on a pull-out; in the gap between the counter end and the wall, where the counter overhang gives the lid room; beside the fridge, as long as the fridge door does not swing into the lid arc; and on the end of a run of units, which is the worst option because it sits in the traffic path.

PlacementCan shape that fitsWatch out for
Inside the sink cabinetPull-out or a bucket on a framePlumbing, and the door opening every time
Counter-end gapRectangular, under 10 in wideLid arc under the overhang
Beside the fridgeNarrow rectangular, 6-8 inFridge door swing and the condenser gap
End of a cabinet runAny, with a damped lidBeing kicked, and sliding on tile

If none of those is available, the honest answer is a cabinet conversion rather than a smaller can. Where to put a trash can in a small kitchen walks through that decision in full, including the renter-friendly version.

If you only look at two, these are the two: one for a gap of about a foot, one for a gap of about seven inches.

Common questions

What is the best small kitchen trash can?

The simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can. It is the only can at this size that uses the same damped lid and steel pedal mechanism as a full-size kitchen can, and at 4.2 gallons it holds about two days of waste for one or two people.

What size is a small kitchen trash can?

Anything from about 2 to 8 gallons. Below 2 gallons you are buying a bathroom can; above 8 you are into the range where standard 13-gallon bags start to fit properly, which changes the shopping entirely.

What size trash bag fits a small kitchen trash can?

Four to eight gallon bags for cans in the 2 to 6 gallon range. A 13-gallon tall kitchen bag will physically fit, but it overhangs far enough to catch on the lid and slip into the bucket.

Is a small trash can better for a small kitchen?

Only if the constraint is floor space. If the constraint is how much waste you generate, a small can means more bag changes rather than less smell - and the smell comes from how long waste sits, not from how big the can is.

How narrow can a kitchen trash can be?

About 6.5 inches wide is the practical floor for a can with a lid and a pedal. Below that you are looking at open-top slim baskets, which solve the width problem and create an odor one.

Should a small kitchen have two bins?

Yes, and the way to do it without losing a second square foot of floor is a dual-compartment can. Two separate small cans cost more floor than one split can of the same total volume.
