The best Toter trash cans, size by size

Toter builds one cart extremely well in four sizes. The right one is almost always the 64-gallon, because that is the size most municipal haulers already run - and a cart your hauler cannot lift is a cart you own for nothing.

The short answer

Buy the Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Cart in 64 gallons. It holds a normal household's week, it is the cart size most American municipal haulers are already equipped to lift, and it carries Toter's 10-year warranty. Go to 96 gallons only if you genuinely generate more than 64 gallons between collections, and drop to 48 or 32 if the cart has to be steered up a slope or through a side gate. If you live where bears do, the cart is not the product you need first - start here.

Toter is the brand people buy after a cheaper cart has already failed on them, and the failure is always the same: the lid separates, the rim cracks, or the axle tears out of the body. Toter's answer is to mold the body in one piece with a reinforced rim and a molded-in axle, then warrant the result for ten years. The sizes exist to match collection systems, not to upsell you.

Pick the size your hauler collects, then the size you need

This is the order of operations most people get backwards. An automated or semi-automated collection truck grabs a cart by a standardized rim profile at a standardized height, and 64 and 96 gallons are the two sizes that system is built around. A 32-gallon Toter is a superb cart, but on a street with fully automated collection it may simply not be picked up.

SizeRealistic householdWhy you would choose it
32 gallonOne or two people, or a second recycling cartOne adult can steer it full; fits a narrow side gate
48 gallonTwo to three peopleThe honest middle - more than a 32 without the bulk of a 64
64 gallonThree to five peopleThe standard curbside size; what most haulers run
96 gallonFive or more, or fortnightly collectionA full week plus yard waste, in one cart
Capacities are the nominal figures Toter states. Check with your hauler before buying anything other than 64 or 96.

If you are weighing the two big sizes against each other specifically, that is its own decision and we gave it its own page. The short version: a full 96 is genuinely hard to steer, and on a sloped driveway the 64 is the better cart even for a large household.

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 64 Gallon

01 — Best outdoor cart overall

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 64 Gallon

The cart most municipalities issue, sold retail: rotationally molded, ten-year warranty, and a lid hinged to the body.

Capacity
64 gallons
Construction
Advanced rotational molding, one piece
Rim
Rugged Rim, reinforced
Base
Bottom wear strip
Wheels
Two
Warranty
10 years

Toter builds these with an advanced rotational molding process — one seamless piece with a reinforced Rugged Rim and a bottom wear strip, which is why they survive being dragged across concrete and tipped by an automated truck arm. The attached hinged lid is the security feature that matters most: a raccoon cannot knock a lid off a can when the lid is part of the can. The lower handle height also makes it easier to tilt than it looks.

What we'd flag: an attached hinged lid is not a locked lid. A determined raccoon can still lever it open, which is why this pairs with a strap rather than replacing one.

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 96 Gallon

02 — Best large capacity

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 96 Gallon

The 96-gallon cart: the biggest size most automated collection trucks will lift, for households that fill a 64 every week.

Capacity
96 gallons
Construction
Advanced rotational molding
Wheels
Two
Warranty
10 years

If you are putting a second can out every collection day, one 96 costs less than two 64s, takes less driveway and gets emptied in one lift. Same rotationally molded construction, same Rugged Rim, same ten-year warranty.

What we'd flag: a full 96-gallon cart is genuinely heavy to steer, and if your driveway has a slope or a step this is the wrong size whatever the arithmetic says. Check your hauler accepts 96s before buying, too.

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 48 Gallon

03 — Best mid-size cart

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 48 Gallon

The 48-gallon Toter: municipal construction and a ten-year warranty, in the size most households actually fill in a week.

Capacity
48 gallons
Construction
Advanced rotational molding, seamless
Lid
Attached, hinged
Wheels
Two, Quiet-Cap, molded-in axle
Material
Polyethylene, up to 50% recycled content
Warranty
10 years; 15-20 year stated service life

Forty-eight gallons is the size nobody is issued and plenty of people need — more than a 32 for a household with a yard, less than a 64 to wrestle down a sloped drive. Toter builds it the same way as the rest of the range: one seamless rotationally molded piece, Rugged Rim reinforcement, a molded-in axle, Quiet-Cap wheels, and up to 50% recycled polyethylene. Toter states a ten-year warranty and a 15 to 20-year service life.

What we'd flag: 48 gallons is a non-standard municipal size. If your hauler only lifts issued carts, this is a second can rather than your curbside one — check before you buy.

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 32 Gallon

04 — Best small outdoor cart

Toter Heavy Duty Two-Wheel Trash Cart, 32 Gallon

The 32-gallon Toter, for a small household, a tight side return, or anyone who cannot manage a 64 when it is full.

Capacity
32 gallons
Construction
Advanced rotational molding
Wheels
Two
Warranty
10 years

The same construction and the same ten-year warranty in a size a smaller person can steer up a slope when loaded. For a one or two-person household a 64 is mostly empty air anyway, and an emptier can smells less.

What we'd flag: 32 gallons is one week of trash for two people and no more. If you have a yard or do a monthly clear-out, you will be stacking bags beside it.

What the 10-year warranty is actually buying

A warranty on an outdoor cart is a claim about three parts: the body, the lid hinge and the axle. Toter builds the body by advanced rotational molding, which produces a seamless wall of even thickness rather than two halves joined together, and states a 15 to 20 year service life for its two-wheel carts alongside the 10-year warranty. The lid is attached and hinged rather than resting on the rim, and the axle is molded into the body rather than bolted through it.

  • The rim is the part that usually fails. Toter reinforces it - the Rugged Rim on the 64 - because that is where an automated truck grabs the cart and where a cheap cart cracks first.
  • A bottom wear strip is not a detail. Carts get dragged. A molded wear strip is the difference between a cart that wears a hole in its base and one that does not.
  • The polyethylene is up to 50% recycled content on the 48-gallon cart, which Toter states without any reduction in the warranty term.
  • Quiet-Cap wheels matter at 6am. A cart dragged down a concrete driveway at collection time is the loudest thing on the street.

The honest comparison is against Rubbermaid, which sells a perfectly good resin cart for a lot less money. We put the two brands head to head in Rubbermaid vs Toter - the summary is that Rubbermaid is the right buy for a garage or a second can, and Toter is the right buy for the cart that lives at the curb.

The two carts that cover almost everybody: the standard 64, and the 96 for a household that genuinely fills one.

The Bear Tough cart is a different product with the same body - and you cannot order it here

Toter's Bear Tough carts take the standard cart and add a double-wall rotationally molded lid, quarter-inch steel U-bolt hinges and a bear-resistant lock. Toter states they are IGBC certified and hold a Three Star rating from Living with Wildlife, the highest that program awards. The warranty drops to three years, which tells you something about how hard those parts get worked. We have left them off the ranked list for a plain reason: they are sold through dealers and municipal contracts rather than retail, so there is no listing we can send you to. If you need a bear-resistant container today, the options you can actually buy are here.

The reason a certified cart in 64 gallons beats a specialty container is collection: 64 is the size your hauler already lifts, so the certification does not cost you your service. That is the argument for asking your hauler or municipality about Bear Tough carts rather than buying a container nobody will empty. Bear-resistant vs bear-proof, explained.

How we picked

We have not put these carts behind a truck. What we compared is Toter's published specification for each size - construction method, rim and axle design, wheel type, recycled content, warranty term and stated service life - and then ranked on the single question that decides whether an outdoor cart was a good buy: will the thing still be whole in five winters. Methodology, disclosure.

The 64 leads because it is the size the collection system is built around. The 96 is second because capacity genuinely solves a problem for large households even though it is harder to steer. The 48 and 32 rank below them on availability of collection rather than on build quality - every one of the four is the same cart in a different size, so the ranking is really a ranking of household fit.

Common questions

What size Toter trash can should I buy?

The 64-gallon in almost every case. It holds a normal household's week and it is the cart size most municipal haulers are equipped to lift. Only go to 96 gallons if you really fill more than 64 gallons between collections.

Are Toter trash cans worth the money?

If the cart lives at the curb, yes. You are buying a one-piece rotationally molded body, a reinforced rim, a molded-in axle and a 10-year warranty, against a cheaper cart whose lid or rim is the part that fails first.

What sizes do Toter trash cans come in?

The homeowner two-wheel carts are sold in 32, 48, 64 and 96 gallons. The bear-resistant Bear Tough carts come in 64 and 96 gallons, which are the two sizes most collection trucks handle.

How long does a Toter cart last?

Toter warrants its two-wheel carts for 10 years and states a 15 to 20 year service life. The Bear Tough carts carry a shorter 3-year limited warranty because the latch and lid hinges take far more load.

Will my hauler collect a Toter cart?

Usually, if it is 64 or 96 gallons - those are the standard automated collection sizes. Smaller carts and anything with a latch are worth a phone call first, because some haulers will not service a lid they cannot open from the truck.

Is a Toter better than a Rubbermaid?

For a curbside cart, yes, and the warranty is the evidence. For a garage can, a second recycling bin or anything that does not get grabbed by a truck, a Rubbermaid Roughneck does the same job for less money.
