Touchless Trash Cans

The best affordable touchless trash cans

A cheap sensor can opens exactly like an expensive one. What you give up is the adaptive sensor - and once you know that, the budget bracket is an easy place to shop well.

The short answer

Buy the Ninestars 13 Gallon Rectangular Motion Sensor Trash Can. It is the only can in this bracket with a published battery figure - Ninestars states up to nine months on two D cells - and a rectangular body means it sits flush to a wall rather than wasting a wedge of floor. The iTouchless 13 Gallon Oval Plastic is the one to buy if dents and fingerprints are what make your cans look old, and the EKO Mirage-T if you want a brushed steel body that does one thing properly and nothing else.

All four run on standard 13-gallon bags. That matters more than it sounds: a coded liner is a permanent subscription, and none of these cans has one.

What you actually give up at this price

One thing, and it is worth understanding fully before you buy, because it is behind nearly every one-star review in the category.

Every can here closes on a fixed timer. The lid opens when your hand enters range, waits a set few seconds, then shuts - whether or not you are done. A premium adaptive sensor keeps the lid open while something is still in front of it, which is why nobody complains about a simplehuman closing on their wrist. The workaround on a budget can is the manual mode: most of these will hold the lid open on a button press, and you learn to reach for it when you are scraping a plate.

  • Nominal capacity is not usable capacity. The lid mechanism occupies the top of the can, so a body rated 50 liters holds less in the bag. Ninestars is unusually honest about it and quotes 10.2 to 11.6 usable gallons on the DZT-50-9 - assume a similar gap on anything else at this price.
  • Battery life is the real running cost. A can that eats D cells every two months costs more to own than the gap to a premium model. This is the whole reason we rank published figures first.
  • Warranty is short. One to two years is typical in this bracket, against ten on a Brabantia. For a product with electronics in it, that is a short cover.
  • No filter as standard, usually. The iTouchless models are the exception - they ship with an activated carbon filter in the lid.

If none of that sounds acceptable, the honest alternative is not a more expensive sensor can - it is a step can, which has no batteries and no timer at all. Step can vs touchless trash can sets the trade out, and are touchless trash cans worth it? puts the running cost in front of you.

How we picked

We did not lab-test these. We established which sensor cans are currently sold in the budget bracket, confirmed each against the manufacturer's own product page, and ranked on four criteria: whether the maker publishes a battery figure, the body shape and how it sits in a real kitchen, whether the liner is a standard size, and what the warranty says. We deliberately did not rank on finish. Methodology, disclosure.

The picks in full

Ninestars 13 Gallon Rectangular Motion Sensor Trash Can

01 — Best published battery life

Ninestars 13 Gallon Rectangular Motion Sensor Trash Can

The rectangular Ninestars, and the only sensor can in this price class that publishes how long a set of batteries lasts.

Capacity
13 gallons / 50 liters
Dimensions
15.24" L x 11.22" W x 25.04" H
Weight
6.75 lb empty
Shape
Rectangular, sits flush to a wall
Power
2 x D batteries — up to 9 months (manufacturer figure)
Bag retention
Removable liner ring
Warranty
2 years

Two reasons to take this one over the round original. The first is geometry: a rectangular body sits flush to a wall or an island and wastes nothing in a corner, where a semi-round leaves dead space. The second is that Ninestars publishes a battery figure for it — up to nine months on two D cells — which is more than anyone else in this bracket is willing to commit to in writing. The lid is a precision fit that closes softly and seals odour in, and the liner ring keeps the bag edge out of sight.

What we'd flag: square internal corners are harder to clean than rounded ones, and a leaked bag pools in those corners. Expect to get a cloth into them. Nine months is also a manufacturer figure on normal household use, not a tested one.

iTouchless 13 Gallon Oval Plastic Sensor Can

02 — Best lightweight touchless

iTouchless 13 Gallon Oval Plastic Sensor Can

The plastic-bodied version of the same sensor can — lighter, cheaper, and immune to the two things that make steel cans look old.

Capacity
13 gallons / 50 liters
Body
Plastic
Odor control
AbsorbX activated carbon filter

Stainless steel cans fail cosmetically long before they fail mechanically: a dent near the pedal and a permanent haze of fingerprints. A plastic body has neither problem, wipes clean properly, and is light enough to move with one hand while you mop.

What we'd flag: plastic scuffs, and over years in a sunny kitchen it discolors. It will look tired sooner than steel even though it will not dent.

EKO Mirage-T 50L Motion Sensor Trash Can

03 — Best simple sensor can

EKO Mirage-T 50L Motion Sensor Trash Can

A plain rectangular sensor can on standard 13-gallon bags, with no app, no voice control and nothing proprietary.

Capacity
50 liters / 13.2 gallons
Opening
Infrared motion sensor
Bag compatibility
Standard 13-gallon bags
Finish
Brushed stainless steel

The lid opens when your hand comes into range and closes a few seconds later. That is the entire feature set, and for a lot of kitchens that is correct — every extra feature on a sensor can is another thing that can stop working.

What we'd flag: fixed close delay, same as the Ninestars. There is no way to hold it open for a long job short of propping the lid.

Ninestars DZT-50-9 13.2 Gallon Motion Sensor Trash Can

04 — Best battery life

Ninestars DZT-50-9 13.2 Gallon Motion Sensor Trash Can

The sensor can with the best published battery figure in the category: about 10,000 cycles on three C cells.

Capacity
50 liters / 13.2 gallons nominal
Usable volume
10.2-11.6 gallons (manufacturer figure)
Dimensions
16.5" L x 11.5" W x 28.4" H
Weight
7.8 lb empty
Body
Oval, 430 stainless steel
Power
3 x C batteries
Battery life
~10,000 open-close cycles (manufacturer figure)
Bag retention
Removable interior liner

Ninestars states roughly 10,000 opens per set of three C batteries, which on normal household use is the better part of a year, and nobody else in this bracket publishes a figure at all. The body is 430 stainless rather than a painted steel skin, the lid opens and closes on a silent mechanism rather than a spring, and the interior liner lifts out so a bag change does not mean reaching down the inside of the can.

What we'd flag: the sensor runs a fixed timer rather than an adaptive one. If you pause mid-scrape it will close on you, and that is the behaviour people return sensor cans over. Be careful with the capacity too — Ninestars rates the body at 50 litres but the current listing quotes usable volume as 10.2 to 11.6 gallons, which is what a bag actually holds once the lid mechanism is in the way.

If a bathroom rather than a kitchen is the room in question, the sizing logic changes completely - the best touchless trash cans for bathrooms is the right page. For the premium end, the best touchless trash cans ranks the whole category including the adaptive-sensor models.

Making a cheap sensor can behave

  • Mind what is in front of the sensor. A cupboard door that swings into range, or a bin positioned where the dog's tail passes, makes the lid cycle all day and flattens the batteries. A touchless can that keeps opening is the fix list.
  • Keep the sensor window clean. A smear of cooking grease reads as a permanent hand to an infrared eye.
  • Use alkaline cells and change them as a set. Mixing an old cell with new ones is behind a lot of erratic behaviour. Touchless trash can batteries and power covers AC adapters too, which are worth it on a can that gets used constantly.
  • Hide the bag with the liner ring, do not knot it. Every can here has one, and a knotted bag is what makes a budget can look cheap.

The two we would actually buy in this bracket: the rectangular Ninestars for a wall, the plastic iTouchless for a kitchen where cans get knocked.

Common questions

What is the best affordable touchless trash can?

The Ninestars 13 Gallon Rectangular Motion Sensor Trash Can. It is the only can in the budget bracket with a published battery figure - up to nine months on two D cells - and the rectangular body sits flush to a wall.

Are cheap touchless trash cans worth buying?

Yes, if you accept one compromise: the lid closes on a fixed timer rather than an adaptive sensor, so it will shut while you are still scraping a plate unless you use the manual mode.

Do budget sensor cans need special bags?

No. All four picks here run on standard 13-gallon tall kitchen bags, and each has a liner ring to hide the bag edge. A coded liner is a premium-brand thing.

How long do the batteries last in a cheap touchless can?

Where the maker publishes a figure: up to nine months on two D cells for the rectangular Ninestars, and about 10,000 open-close cycles on three C cells for the DZT-50-9. Most brands at this price publish nothing.

Why is the usable capacity less than the stated gallons?

Because the sensor lid mechanism takes up the top of the can. Ninestars quotes 10.2 to 11.6 usable gallons on a 50-liter body - assume a similar gap across the bracket.

Plastic or stainless at this price?

Plastic if the can gets knocked or if fingerprints bother you, stainless if looks matter most. Cheap sensor cans usually fail cosmetically long before they fail mechanically.
