The best Sterilite trash cans, size by size

Sterilite's trash cans are the plainest things in this category and the easiest to buy wrong, because the line runs from 1.5 gallons to 13 and the model numbers tell you nothing. This is the whole range sorted by what it is for, with the liner size for each.

Plain plastic kitchen wastebasket in a utility room

The short answer

For a kitchen, buy the 13 Gallon TouchTop (model 1045) if you want a latched lid and no pedal to break, or the 11.9 Gallon StepOn (1069) if hands-free matters more than the latch. For a gap beside the fridge, the 11 Gallon Slim StepOn (1058) is 10.5 inches wide and still takes a 13-gallon bag. For an office or a mudroom, the 7.5 Gallon TouchTop (1043). For a vanity or a nursery, the 2.7 Gallon StepOn (1061). Every one of them is a plain plastic can and none of them pretends otherwise.

Sterilite is the brand you buy when the can is infrastructure rather than furniture. There is no brushed finish to keep clean, no damper, no filter, no app - there is a body, a lid, a pedal or a latch, and a price that makes the whole decision reversible. What you are really buying is the fit: the right capacity, in the right footprint, on a liner you already own. Get those three right and this is the correct purchase. Get them wrong and the can is in the garage by March.

The two lid mechanisms, and which one you want

Sterilite builds almost everything in two variants, and the choice between them matters more than the capacity does.

TouchTop: a spring latch, no pedal

The TouchTop lid is held shut by a spring latch and opens when you push the panel. The advantage is that the part that normally fails on a cheap can - the pedal linkage - does not exist, and the latch means the lid actually resists being nosed open. The cost is that you touch the can with the hand holding the trash.

StepOn: a pedal, and a lid that just rests

The StepOn models give you hands-free at the usual price: a plastic linkage, an undamped lid that closes with a clack, and no latch holding it down. In a household with a dog or a toddler that last point is the deciding one - how to keep dogs out of the trash explains why an unlatched lid is not a lid at all to a determined animal.

How we picked

Sterilite publishes a model page for every wastebasket it makes, with capacity, outside dimensions and the liner size the can is designed around. We worked from those pages directly on 2026-10-13 rather than from retailer copy, which is why the dimensions below are to the eighth of an inch, and then ranked the line on one question: for the job this size is bought for, is this the can that fits? Methodology, disclosure.

The 13-gallon TouchTop leads because it is the model the brand is searched for and because the latch is a real functional advantage at a price where nothing else offers one. The 11.9-gallon StepOn is second as the hands-free version of the same job. The slim 11-gallon is third because it solves the narrow-gap problem without forcing you onto an odd liner, which almost every slim can does. The 7.5 and 2.7 are placed by room rather than ranked against the kitchen cans - they are different purchases.

A pedal is the part that fails on a cheap can. The TouchTop deletes it — the lid is held shut by a spring latch and opens when you push the panel, so the only moving part is the latch itself. That matters in a household with pets or a toddler, because a latched lid resists a nose or a hand in a way a free-hinged lid does not. Sterilite lists it for standard 13-gallon liners, the rectangular base sits flat against a wall, and the smooth-textured body actually wipes clean.

What we'd flag: you have to touch it. Hands-free is exactly what you give up against a step can, and Sterilite notes the spring is imported — it is the part that will feel tired first.

Most of what people spend on a kitchen can buys finish and damping. If neither matters where the can lives — a garage, a utility room, a rental you are leaving — this covers the actual function for a fraction of it. It takes a large 13-gallon liner, the pedal opens the lid hands-free, and it is light enough to carry out one-handed.

What we'd flag: Sterilite only sells this size as a four-pack, so the price you see is for four cans and you are buying spares whether you wanted them or not. The lid is also not damped: it closes with a clack, and in a kitchen that shares a wall with a bedroom you will notice that every night.

Most slim cans buy their width back by making you buy odd liners. This one does not — Sterilite lists standard 13-gallon bags for it, so the gap beside the fridge gets a hands-free can and you keep buying the same box of liners. The oversized lid covers the bag overhang that makes slim cans look untidy, and the long shallow footprint tucks against a wall rather than standing in a walkway.

What we'd flag: this one is sold only as a four-pack, so the price covers four cans rather than one. Eleven gallons in a 10.5-inch-wide body also means it is deep and front-heavy, so a full bag wants to tip it as you lift the liner out, and the lid is undamped — it clacks.

The gap in most houses is not 13 gallons or 2.5 gallons, it is the room that generates more than a vanity basket holds and less than a kitchen can. This covers it: a narrow rectangular body, the latch on the short end of the lid so it opens along the can rather than into the wall, and standard 8-gallon liners. Sterilite lists the same body as a recycling bin, which is the honest second use — paper in an office fills a can faster than trash does.

What we'd flag: 8-gallon liners are the size most households do not already own, so budget for a box. And like every TouchTop, the latch is a spring.

Small cans are usually open baskets, which is exactly wrong in the two rooms that need them most — a bathroom and a nursery both benefit from a lid nobody has to touch. This one has a pedal at 2.7 gallons, and Sterilite lists it for a 4-gallon liner or a standard shopping bag, so you are not buying a special size. The removable inner liner is the detail that matters: when something leaks, the liner comes out and the shell stays clean.

What we'd flag: it comes as a two-pack, so the price is for a pair. 2.7 gallons also fills fast, and a pedal on a can this light will slide on tile if you stand on it rather than step on it. Put it against something.

The whole range, with liner sizes

Sterilite's wastebasket catalog is larger than the five cans above - there are oval and vanity bodies at the small end that are open baskets rather than lidded cans. Here is the useful part of the range in one table, so you can match a room to a model number before you shop.

Capacities, dimensions and liner sizes as published on Sterilite's own model pages, October 2026.

Two things that table makes obvious. First, the three kitchen-size cans all run on the same 13-gallon liner, so you can mix them around the house without changing what you buy - that is the single best reason to stay inside one brand. Second, the 7.5-gallon jumps you to an 8-gallon bag, which is the size almost nobody has in the cupboard; trash bag sizes explained is worth two minutes before you commit a room to it.

Where a plain plastic can is the right call

There is a tendency to treat a cheap can as a compromise. It is not, in four rooms specifically: a garage, a utility or laundry room, a rental you are leaving, and a kids' room. In all four, the things a premium can sells you - a damped lid, a brushed finish, a published step rating - are either invisible or actively wasted, and the things that matter are that it takes a standard bag and that replacing it costs nothing.

Where it is the wrong call is an open-plan kitchen next to a living space, because an undamped lid bangs, and anywhere the can is on show. That trade is the whole argument of stainless steel vs plastic trash cans, and if you land on the plastic side of it, the best kitchen trash cans under $50 is the wider field this line competes in.

The two Sterilite sizes people most often cannot find anywhere else: a genuinely slim 11-gallon that takes a normal bag, and a 2.7-gallon with a pedal.

Lids, springs and buying a second one

The failure mode on a TouchTop is the latch spring going soft, and on a StepOn it is the pedal rod. Sterilite does not sell individual lids or springs to consumers for these models, which is why a surprising number of people search for a Sterilite lid replacement and come up short. At this price the practical answer is a second can rather than a part - and the reason that is not as annoying as it sounds is that the bodies stack, so a spare takes almost no storage.

If a lid has already gone and you would rather fix than replace, trash can lid replacement, brand by brand covers which manufacturers actually supply parts, and trash can without a lid makes the honest case for just running it open in the right room.

Common questions

What sizes do Sterilite trash cans come in?

The lidded range runs 2.7, 7.5, 11, 11.9 and 13 gallons, plus smaller open vanity and oval baskets from 1.5 gallons up. The 11, 11.9 and 13 gallon cans all take a standard 13-gallon liner.

Does Sterilite make a 13 gallon trash can?

Yes - the 13 Gallon TouchTop Wastebasket, model 1045, 16 3/8 by 12 5/8 by 24 3/4 inches, with a spring-latched push lid and standard 13-gallon liners.

What is the difference between Sterilite TouchTop and StepOn?

TouchTop has a spring-latched lid you push with a hand and no pedal to break. StepOn has a foot pedal and an unlatched lid that simply rests closed. Pick TouchTop if the lid must stay shut, StepOn if you need hands-free.

What size bag fits a Sterilite 11.9 gallon wastebasket?

A standard 13-gallon tall kitchen bag. The extra slack becomes overhang that the lid covers, so you do not need a smaller liner for the smaller body.

Can you buy a replacement Sterilite trash can lid?

Not as a consumer part for these models. Sterilite does not sell individual lids or latch springs for the wastebasket line, so a broken lid in practice means a replacement can.

Are Sterilite trash cans made in the USA?

Sterilite lists the wastebaskets as made in the USA, with the TouchTop latch springs imported, and states the plastic is BPA-free and phthalate-free.
