20 gallon trash can dimensions
Twenty gallons is the size people move up to when 13 stops working, and it is the size where the footprint stops being predictable. Here are the real published numbers, by style of can.

How big is a 20 gallon trash can?
A kitchen-style 20-gallon step can is typically 29 to 32 inches tall, 14 to 17 inches wide and 15 to 17 inches deep - it gets the extra volume over a 13-gallon can mostly from height, not from floor space. A round 20-gallon utility container is the opposite shape: about 22 to 23 inches tall and 19 to 22 inches across. Either way it needs 20-gallon liners; a 13-gallon bag will not reach the rim.
| Can | Style | Published dimensions | Liner |
|---|---|---|---|
| EKO Hudson 75L | Kitchen step can | 16.3" D x 14.3" W x 31.4" H, 19 lb empty | 20 gal |
| Glad GLD-74507 | Kitchen step can | About 16" x 16" footprint, 29"+ tall (listings vary to 18" x 17.25") | 20 gal |
| Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE 20 | Round utility container | 22.34" L x 19.38" W x 22.88" H, 5.5 lb empty | 20 gal or larger |
| Rubbermaid Commercial Slim Jim 23 | Narrow commercial (23 gal) | 30" H x 11" W x 22" D | 23 gal or larger |
Twenty gallons against the sizes either side
| Capacity | Typical height | Typical footprint | Bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 gal / 50 L | 24 to 27" | About 16" x 13" | 13 gal (standard tall kitchen) |
| 20 gal / 75 L | 29 to 32" | About 15" x 16" | 20 gal |
| 23 gal (commercial slim) | 30" | 11" x 22" | 23 gal or larger |
| 32 gal | 27 to 37" | 20 to 24" diameter or square | 33 to 39 gal |
The pattern is worth internalizing: between 13 and 20 gallons the can grows upward, and after 20 gallons it starts growing outward instead. That is why 20 gallons is the last size that fits in a normal kitchen slot, and why the jump from 20 to 32 is a bigger change to your floor plan than the jump from 13 to 20. 13 vs 20 gallon trash cans works through the decision, and the trash can size chart has the full ladder in gallons, liters and quarts.
What bags fit a 20 gallon can
Twenty-gallon liners, or a 20-30 gallon bag. This is the part that catches people out at this size, and it is worth hearing before you buy rather than after: the 13-gallon bags already in your cupboard are too short. They will not reach the rim of a 29-inch can, so they slip into the body under the first load.
- Buy a bag with film to spare. A liner rated exactly 20 gallons often has no excess to fold over the rim. A 20-30 gallon bag gives you the overhang the rings or the ring liner need.
- Expect a smaller box and a higher price per bag. Twenty-gallon liners sell in smaller counts than 13-gallon ones and cost more each. Over a year that is a real running cost, and it belongs in the decision.
- Gauge matters more at this size. Twenty gallons of waste is heavy, and a thin bag splits at the side seam on the lift rather than at the bottom.
- Check whether your can has a ring. A liner ring or bag rings hide the overhang; a plain rim does not, and the bag edge will show.

If you want the models compared rather than measured, that is the best 20 and 21 gallon trash cans. For the bag-sizing logic across every size, trash bag sizes explained is the reference, and why your trash bag doesn't fit covers the overhang maths.
Converting 20 gallons
| Unit | Figure |
|---|---|
| US gallons | 20 |
| Liters | About 75.7 |
| Quarts | 80 |
| Cubic feet | About 2.67 |
That rounding explains most of the confusion in listings at this size: 75 L, 75.5 L and 20 gal all describe the same can, and a can sold as 21 gallons (80 L) is one step up rather than a different measurement of the same thing. Trash can liters to gallons has the full conversion table if you are comparing an imported listing.
Is 20 gallons the right size for you?
- Yes if you are a household of four or more, you cannot get to the curb more than once a week, or you are tying off a 13-gallon bag before dinner is cleared.
- Yes if the can lives at the end of a cabinet run or against a pantry wall, where height is free and width is not.
- No if the lift is the problem. A full 20-gallon bag is heavy, and that is the real limit of this size rather than anything about the can.
- No if you have an under-counter slot. Pull-outs top out well below this - the best under-sink pull-out trash cans explains the ceiling.
- Consider a second can instead. Two 13-gallon cans split trash and recycling and each stays liftable. What size trash can for a family of 4 runs that comparison.
Common questions
How big is a 20 gallon trash can?
A kitchen-style 20-gallon step can is typically 29 to 32 inches tall, 14 to 17 inches wide and 15 to 17 inches deep. A round 20-gallon utility container is shorter and wider: about 22 to 23 inches tall and 19 to 22 inches across.
How tall is a 20 gallon trash can?
Kitchen step cans at this capacity run about 29 to 32 inches - the EKO Hudson 75L is 31.4 inches. Round commercial 20-gallon containers are much shorter at about 22.9 inches.
What size bags fit a 20 gallon trash can?
Twenty-gallon liners, or a 20-30 gallon bag so there is film to fold over the rim. A standard 13-gallon kitchen bag will not reach and will slip into the can.
How many liters is a 20 gallon trash can?
About 75.7 liters. Cans sold as 75 L, 75.5 L and 20 gallons are the same size; 80 L is the 21-gallon class, one step up.
Is a 20 gallon trash can too big for a kitchen?
Not usually - it takes roughly the footprint of a tall 13-gallon can and finds the volume in height. The practical limit is the weight of a full bag, not the space.
What is the difference between 20 and 21 gallon cans?
One size step. Twenty gallons is about 75 liters and 21 gallons is about 80 liters, and the larger one is usually a sensor can. Both need 20-gallon-plus liners.

Lid & Liner covers one category and tries to cover it completely.
