Touchless Trash Cans

The best smart trash cans

Start with the thing every listing in this category avoids saying: none of these connect to an app, and the capacity on the box is usually larger than the one on the spec sheet. Here is what a smart can actually does, and what it costs to keep running.

By Ryder M. · Last reviewed October 27, 2026

The short answer

Buy the TOWNEW S2000. It is the only can in this category whose maker publishes a proper spec sheet - capacity in liters, dimensions in millimeters, a battery rating - and the thermal sealing head is the most developed version of the mechanism. Buy the Airdeer L2 if you need this in a can big enough for a kitchen, the TOWNEW T Air Lite if you want the cheapest honest way to find out whether you like the idea, and the Airdeer C3 if the room you actually want it in is a bathroom. The Gleynest is the budget entry and it does not weld anything shut - read the entry before you assume it does.

Before any of that, the money question: all of these run on proprietary refill rings. The hardware price is the smaller number. We do that arithmetic in full below, because it is the thing that decides whether any of these belong in your kitchen.

What "smart" means in this category, and what it does not

There is no app. We looked, and we want to be blunt about it because the word "smart" in every one of these listings implies otherwise: there is no mainstream kitchen trash can on sale that connects to your phone, reports a fill level, joins a smart-home routine, or does anything over wifi. If you came here looking for that product, it does not currently exist at a price a household would pay.

What "smart" actually means here is a specific and much narrower mechanism: the can seals the liner shut for you and feeds the next one into place. Instead of a box of bags you buy a ring of continuous film. Press a button or trip the sensor, a heated bar welds the film closed, and you lift out a sealed parcel with a fresh liner already waiting. That is the whole product.

Marketing wordWhat it actually isWorth paying for?
Self-sealingA heated bar welds the liner shut on commandYes, in the right room - see below
Self-changingA continuous film ring feeds the next liner automaticallyYes, and it is the half people underrate
Smart / intelligentMarketing. There is no app and no connectivityNo - ignore the word entirely
Motion sensorThe same infrared lid as any touchless canYes, but it is not what you are paying the premium for
Odor controlA sealed bag contains smell; some models add a filter slotThis is the real benefit, and it is genuine

Strip the word "smart" out and the honest description is: an automatic bagging machine for a small bin. Judged as that, it is a real product that solves a real problem. Judged as a connected appliance, it is vapor.

How we ranked these

Five criteria, in the order that decides whether the can is still in use in a year. We have not bought and stress-tested these - we do not run a lab, and we say so - so where a claim needs equipment to check, we report whose claim it is.

  1. Does the maker publish specifications? This category is full of near-identical listings from brands with no website. TOWNEW publishes capacity, dimensions, battery rating and ring type per model. Airdeer publishes nothing beyond listing copy. That gap is a real quality signal and it is weighted heavily here.
  2. Is the capacity figure honest? The retail listing and the spec sheet disagree on at least one popular model by more than a gallon. A can whose published liters match its advertised gallons has already told you something about the company.
  3. What does the refill ring cost per bag? This is the running cost and it is the whole economic case. A can that seals bags but costs five times as much per liner than a box of bags needs to be solving something you care about.
  4. Does the sealing mechanism actually weld? Some cheaper "self-sealing" cans hold the bag by suction and close it when you pull. That is a different and much less capable product sold with the same words.
  5. Is it the right size for the room it suits? The mechanism works best small, and the rooms where a sealed bag genuinely matters are mostly small rooms. A 3-gallon can in a bathroom beats a 4-gallon can pretending to be a kitchen bin.

The capacity problem, with a worked example

This site exists partly because nominal sizing in this category is unreliable, and the smart-can corner is the worst example we have found.

Take the TOWNEW S2000, which is our top pick. The Amazon listing title says 5.5 gallons. TOWNEW's own specification page for the same model says 16.0 liters. Sixteen liters is 4.2 gallons. That is not a rounding difference; it is a third again. By contrast the T Air Lite is specified at 16.6 liters and sold as 4.4 gallons, which is correct - so this is not a brand that cannot do the conversion, it is one listing that does not match the spec sheet.

The practical consequence: almost everything in this category is a bathroom, bedroom, nursery or office can, regardless of how it is photographed. The single exception is the Airdeer L2 at a listed 8 gallons, and even there you are taking the listing's word for it. If you want hands-free in a real kitchen at real capacity, you want a plain sensor can and not one of these.

The picks in detail

Every pick carries a stated drawback. In this category the drawbacks are unusually load-bearing, because the hardware differences are small and the consumable differences are not.

TOWNEW S2000 Smart Trash Can with Self-Sealing Bag Closure

01 — Best overall

TOWNEW S2000 Smart Trash Can with Self-Sealing Bag Closure

The current TOWNEW flagship: a motion-sensor lid, a thermal head that welds the bag shut, and a ring that feeds the next liner into place on its own.

Capacity
16.0 L per TOWNEW (listing says 5.5 gal)
Dimensions
305 x 260 x 390 mm (12.0 x 10.2 x 15.4 in)
Power
2000 mAh rechargeable, up to 20 days standby
Sealing
Thermal sealing head
Liner
R16 refill ring, proprietary
Opening
Motion sensor lid

TOWNEW invented this category and the S2000 is the version where it stops feeling like a prototype. Press the button and a heated bar welds the liner closed, the sealed bag lifts out in one piece, and the next one is already seated. TOWNEW publishes real specifications for it - 16.0 liters, 305 x 260 x 390 mm, a 2000 mAh cell rated up to 20 days of standby - which no other brand in this category does, and that alone is most of why it is the pick.

What we'd flag two things. First, the capacity: the retail listing says 5.5 gallons, TOWNEW's own spec sheet says 16.0 liters, and 16 liters is 4.2 gallons. Buy it expecting a small can. Second, it runs on proprietary R16 refill rings, so you are buying a consumable subscription with the hardware - budget for that before you decide, not after.

Airdeer L2 8 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

02 — Best for a real kitchen

Airdeer L2 8 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

The largest self-sealing can we can find on sale: 8 gallons on the listing, where the rest of the category tops out around four.

Capacity
8 gallons (listing figure)
Opening
Motion sensor lid
Sealing
Automatic seal and bag change
In the box
6 refill bag rings
Published specs
None beyond the listing

Every other can in this category is a bathroom or bedroom product wearing kitchen marketing, because sealing a bag mechanically is easier at small volumes. The L2 is the exception at a listed 8 gallons, which is the first capacity in this category that a household of two could actually run as a main kitchen can. It ships with six refill rings in the box, which is a meaningful chunk of the first year's consumables included.

What we'd flag: Airdeer publishes no spec sheet - no dimensions, no battery figure, no bag count per ring - so everything here is the listing's own claim, and we are not going to dress that up. It also costs roughly twice the small TOWNEW while using the same idea, and its rings are not compatible with TOWNEW's. At this price a plain sensor can plus better habits is a serious alternative.

TOWNEW T Air Lite (T02B) Auto-Sealing 4.4 Gallon Smart Trash Can

03 — Best cheap way in

TOWNEW T Air Lite (T02B) Auto-Sealing 4.4 Gallon Smart Trash Can

The light, open-top TOWNEW: one button welds the bag shut, and at 16.6 liters its listed 4.4 gallons is the figure the spec sheet actually supports.

Capacity
16.6 liters / 4.4 gallons
Dimensions
284 x 284 x 333 mm (11.2 x 11.2 x 13.1 in)
Weight
1.0 kg (2.2 lb)
Power
Rechargeable, up to 30 days standby
Sealing
One-touch thermoplastic weld
Liner
T1 / T Air Lite square ring, up to 25 bags

This is the cheapest route into the self-sealing idea from the brand that knows how to build it. TOWNEW specifies it at 16.6 liters and 284 x 284 x 333 mm, with a standby life it states as up to 30 days - longer than the bigger S2000 - and a square T1-standard refill ring carrying up to 25 bags. If you want to find out whether a self-sealing can changes anything for you, this is the lowest-risk way to do it.

What we'd flag: it is an open-top barrel with a push-button seal rather than a sensor lid, so it is not hands-free in the way the sensor models are - you press a button. Stock on this model is thin and it has been through several generations, so check the model code on the listing. And it is still a 4.4-gallon can: this is a bathroom, bedroom or desk product.

Airdeer A1 4 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

04 — Best mid-size

Airdeer A1 4 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

Airdeer's 4-gallon sensor model - the middle of the range, and the one whose refill rings are the cheapest per bag of any brand here.

Capacity
4 gallons (listing figure)
Opening
Motion sensor lid
Sealing
Automatic seal and bag change
In the box
6 refill rings (A1 type)
Published specs
None beyond the listing

Four gallons is where self-sealing mechanisms work best: the bag is small enough to weld cleanly and light enough to lift out sealed. The A1 adds a motion-sensor lid, which the cheap TOWNEW does not have, and shares its refill ring with the bigger L2 so you are not stocking two consumables if you own both. Six rings come in the box.

What we'd flag: the same transparency problem as the L2 - no published dimensions, battery figure or bags-per-ring count, so you are buying on listing copy. Airdeer also sells near-identical 3, 4 and 8-gallon models under different letters with overlapping listings, so read the model code (A1, C3, L2) rather than the photo, because the rings are not interchangeable between them.

Airdeer C3 3 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

05 — Best for a bathroom

Airdeer C3 3 Gallon Self-Sealing Smart Trash Can

The 3-gallon Airdeer - the size where automatic sealing stops being a gadget and starts being the point.

Capacity
3 gallons (listing figure)
Opening
Motion sensor lid
Sealing
Automatic seal and bag change
In the box
6 refill rings (C3 type)
Ring compatibility
C3 only - not A1 or L2

The best argument for this whole category is not the kitchen, it is the rooms where what goes in the bin is private or unpleasant and the bag sits for days before it is full: a bathroom, a nursery, a sickroom. A can that welds the liner shut before you carry it through the house solves that specific problem properly, and at 3 gallons the mechanism has the easiest job it will ever have.

What we'd flag: the C3 uses its own refill ring, explicitly not compatible with the A1 and L2 rings, so owning two Airdeer cans means stocking two consumables. Three gallons also fills fast, and every bag change burns a liner off the roll - the running cost per week in a busy bathroom is higher than the sticker suggests.

Gleynest 3.5 Gallon Automatic Bathroom Trash Can with One-Pull Self Sealing

06 — Cheapest way to try the idea

Gleynest 3.5 Gallon Automatic Bathroom Trash Can with One-Pull Self Sealing

A slim sensor can with bag suction and a one-pull closure, at roughly a quarter of what the sealing brands charge.

Capacity
3.5 gallons (listing figure)
Opening
Motion sensor lid
Bag retention
Suction hold
Closure
One-pull manual seal
Published specs
None beyond the listing

It is worth being clear about what this is: not a thermal sealer. It holds the liner in place with suction and closes it when you pull, which removes the two small irritations that actually drive people mad - a bag that slips into the can, and wrestling a full liner out. For a narrow bathroom or a bedroom it does most of the useful work of a smart can for a fraction of the outlay, and if you decide the category is not for you, you have not spent much finding out.

What we'd flag: it is not self-changing and it does not weld anything shut, so if the sealed-bag part is why you are here, this is not it. It is also a no-name seller with no published specs and no parts path, which at this price is the deal - treat it as a consumable appliance rather than a ten-year purchase.

The refill ring arithmetic, which decides this

Buying one of these is buying a consumable subscription with a trash can attached. Nobody says that out loud, so here is the shape of it, using the only brand that publishes enough numbers to calculate anything.

  1. TOWNEW states up to 150 bags from a 6-pack of T1-series rings, and describes that as roughly a six-month supply for one can. So one can gets through about two packs a year.
  2. Compare that against a box of ordinary liners. An 80-count box of 8-gallon drawstring bags covers a similar period in a similar-sized bin, usually at a small fraction of the ring cost per bag.
  3. Add the rings that come in the box. Airdeer ships six rings with each can, which is a real chunk of year one absorbed into the purchase price - and worth counting when you compare sticker prices.
  4. Check which ring your model takes before you order. TOWNEW's T1-series ring does not fit the S2000. The S2000's R16 ring fits nothing else. Airdeer's A1/L2 ring explicitly does not fit the C3. Three brands, four incompatible consumables.
  5. Know that third-party rings exist. Compatible rings from other sellers run at well under half the official price, with the usual aftermarket caveat: fit is reported rather than guaranteed, and a ring that does not seat correctly will jam a sealing head.

The three official refill systems. Price these before you price the can - this is the number that decides whether a smart can makes sense for your household.

Our honest read: on pure cost per bag, a smart can loses to a box of 8-gallon liners every time, and it is not close. The case for buying one is never economic. It is that the bag gets sealed before it leaves the room, and in some rooms that is worth paying for.

Who these are actually for

We think there are four households where a self-sealing can is a genuinely good purchase, and a lot where it is an expensive novelty. Being specific about which is which is more useful than a score.

  • A bathroom where the contents are private. The bag is sealed before it crosses the hallway. This is the strongest case in the category and the one the marketing underplays.
  • A nursery or a house with diapers. A welded liner contains odor the way a diaper pail does, without a proprietary cassette - and at a comparable running cost, which is the fair comparison rather than against a box of bags.
  • A sickroom, or anyone with a condition that makes handling waste hard. Not having to touch, gather and knot a liner is an accessibility feature, and it is the use case we would defend hardest.
  • A small office or a studio where the bin is in the same room as the desk and the walk to a dumpster is long enough that sealing matters.

And the households where we would not buy one: a busy family kitchen, because nothing in this category is big enough and the per-bag cost at that volume is punishing; anyone who empties a bin straight into an outdoor cart ten feet away, because sealing buys you nothing; and anyone whose actual complaint is that their current can smells, which is a cleaning problem and not a hardware one.

The failure modes worth knowing before you buy

  • The sealing head is the part that fails. It is a heating element on a hinge doing a mechanical job several times a week. None of these brands publishes a cycle rating, and none of them sells a replacement head. When it goes, the can goes.
  • Every one of these is rechargeable. That is a second consumable with a finite life, and no model here publishes a replaceable battery. A can that will not hold charge in year four is a can you replace.
  • A part-used ring is wasted when you change cans. Switching brands or sizes strands whatever film is left on the roll.
  • Discontinuation is a real risk. This category is young, the brands are small, and a can whose rings stop being made is a can with no liners. TOWNEW is the safest bet here mostly because it has been doing this longest.
  • The sensor lid has the same quirks as any other. Grease on the window reads as a hand; a tired battery causes erratic opening. Touchless lid not opening applies to these exactly as it does to a plain sensor can.

None of that is a reason to avoid the category. It is a reason to treat these as a five-year appliance with a running cost rather than a ten-year can, and to buy the one from the brand that at least tells you what it built.

If you have decided the sealed bag is worth it: the S2000 for a bathroom or a small kitchen, the L2 if you need the capacity and will accept the missing spec sheet.

Common questions

Is there a trash can that connects to an app?

Not in any mainstream household product we can find. Every can sold as "smart" in this category is self-sealing and self-changing, not connected. There is no fill-level reporting, no wifi and no smart-home integration.

What is the best smart trash can?

The TOWNEW S2000. It is the only one whose maker publishes real specifications - 16.0 liters, 305 x 260 x 390 mm, a 2000 mAh cell rated to about 20 days of standby - and the thermal sealing head is the most developed version of the mechanism.

How much do smart trash can refill rings cost to run?

TOWNEW states up to 150 bags from a six-pack of T1-series rings, which it calls about six months for one can. That works out far more expensive per bag than a box of ordinary liners. Price the rings before you price the can.

Are smart trash can refill rings interchangeable between brands?

No, and often not within a brand either. TOWNEW's T1-series ring does not fit the S2000, the S2000's R16 ring fits nothing else, and Airdeer's A1/L2 ring does not fit its own C3. Check the model code before ordering.

Do smart trash cans really stop odor?

A welded bag does contain smell properly, which is the one benefit in this category we would call genuine. It does nothing about a dirty bucket underneath, so the can still needs cleaning on the same schedule as any other.

Is a smart trash can big enough for a kitchen?

Mostly no. The mechanism works best at small volumes and most models are 3 to 4.4 liters-per-gallon equivalents of a bathroom bin. The Airdeer L2 at a listed 8 gallons is the only one that could serve a small kitchen, and that figure is the listing's rather than a published spec.

What happens when the sealing mechanism breaks?

You replace the can. None of these brands publishes a cycle rating for the sealing head or sells it as a spare part, so treat a self-sealing can as a five-year appliance rather than a long-term purchase.
