Pull-Out & Slim Cans

The best trash cans for RVs and campers

In an RV the capacity question barely matters. What matters is the width of the gap you have, whether the lid stays shut over a speed bump, and how long the waste has to live with you before the next dump station.

The short answer

The Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can is the one to buy for most RVs: 7 inches wide, 13.3 deep, a damped lid that closes quietly in a space where everything is close to your head, and a removable inner bucket so emptying it at a dump station does not mean carrying the whole can. If your gap is narrower still, the Umbra Skinny is 6.5 inches wide. If the can lives in a cabinet or under a dinette bench, the Sterilite 2.7 Gallon StepOn two-pack is the cheap, sensible answer - and you get a spare.

How an RV changes the decision

Four constraints a house kitchen does not have, in the order they will bite you.

  • Width, not gallons. The usable spots in a camper are the gap beside the fridge, the end of a galley run, the space under a dinette bench and the floor of a wet bath. Those are measured in inches, and a round can wastes most of a rectangular gap. Measure the gap before you read any further.
  • It has to stay shut in motion. A free-hinged lid will open on a speed bump, and whatever is in the can will not stay in it. A latched lid or a damped lid that seats positively is worth more than any other feature here. A bungee across the lid is a legitimate travel-day fix.
  • It has to not slide. Anything on a smooth RV floor migrates. Put the can against a cabinet face or inside one, and if the base is light, something non-slip underneath it.
  • The waste lives with you longer. You cannot take the trash out when you are forty miles from a dump station, and an RV is a small sealed box. This is the real reason a lid matters, and the reason the food fraction needs managing separately rather than better odor control on the can.

That last point is worth being blunt about: no can solves RV trash smell. Keeping the wet, food fraction out of the bin solves it. Bag food scraps separately and freeze or ice-box them until you can dispose of them, exactly as you would on a boat. How to stop trash can smell covers the rest of the technique, and it is more relevant in 200 square feet than it is in a house.

How we picked

We did not take these cans on the road. We selected from cans whose manufacturer-published width is genuinely narrow, ranked by the four constraints above, and checked each against a live retailer or manufacturer listing. Where a can has no lid - the Umbra does not - we have said so rather than letting it rank on footprint alone. Methodology, disclosure.

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

01 — Best for a narrow gap

Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can

A seven-inch-wide steel step can with a soft-close lid and a liftable inner bucket, for the gap beside a desk or a vanity.

Capacity
2.6 gallons / 10 liters
Dimensions
13.3" D x 7" W x 14.2" H
Weight
4.5 lb empty
Lid
Soft-close, with a stay-open position
Bucket
Removable inner bucket
Material
Stainless steel

Small cans are chosen by footprint, not capacity, and almost every buying guide gets that backwards. This one is 7 inches wide and 13.3 deep, so it fills a gap a 13-gallon can cannot enter, and it still has the two things that make a can pleasant: a pedal, and a lid damped so it closes quietly rather than clapping. Push the lid back after stepping and it stays open for a cleaning job. The inner bucket lifts out, so emptying it does not mean carrying the whole can.

What we'd flag: 2.6 gallons is a two-day can for a kitchen, not a week's. Clorox's odor protection is a coating on the inner bucket surface rather than a filter, so it does nothing about what is in the bag — a small can stays sweet because you empty it, not because of the finish.

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

02 — Best narrow small can

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

Six and a half inches wide, which is the number that matters when the only space is between the toilet and the wall.

Capacity
2 gallons
Dimensions
13.5" x 6.5" x 13"
Material
Polypropylene

Integrated

Almost every small bin is round, and a round bin in a rectangular gap wastes most of it. This is a genuine slot-filler at 13.5" x 6.5" x 13", with rounded internal corners so liquid does not get trapped and an integrated handle so you can lift it out one-handed.

What we'd flag: no lid. In a bathroom that is usually fine; anywhere food goes, it is not.

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

03 — Best small step can

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

A proper step can at 16 liters — damped lid, steel pedal, and a footprint that fits beside a dorm desk or under a counter.

Capacity
16 liters / 4.3 gallons

Soft-close, damped

Small bins almost universally use a sprung flap that clacks and eventually stops latching. This is the same damped mechanism simplehuman puts in its kitchen cans, scaled down, which matters most in a room where you also sleep. Sixteen liters is about right for one person emptying twice a week, and the closed lid keeps the room's smell down between trips to the hall chute.

What we'd flag: simplehuman sizes its liners by code letter, and a generic bag in a can this small overhangs badly. Either buy the coded liner or accept the fold.

Sterilite 2.7 Gallon Rectangular StepOn Wastebasket (2-Pack)

04 — Best small step can

Sterilite 2.7 Gallon Rectangular StepOn Wastebasket (2-Pack)

A hands-free can small enough for a vanity or a nursery, with an inner liner that lifts out and a bag-holding lip.

Model
1061
Capacity
2.7 gallons
Dimensions
12 1/8" L x 7 7/8" W x 12 7/8" H
Liners
4-gallon liner or a standard shopping bag
Lid
Step-on; removable inner liner with a bag-holding lip
Colors
Black, white
Body
BPA-free, phthalate-free plastic; made in the USA

Small cans are usually open baskets, which is exactly wrong in the two rooms that need them most — a bathroom and a nursery both benefit from a lid nobody has to touch. This one has a pedal at 2.7 gallons, and Sterilite lists it for a 4-gallon liner or a standard shopping bag, so you are not buying a special size. The removable inner liner is the detail that matters: when something leaks, the liner comes out and the shell stays clean.

What we'd flag: it comes as a two-pack, so the price is for a pair. 2.7 gallons also fills fast, and a pedal on a can this light will slide on tile if you stand on it rather than step on it. Put it against something.

Liners, and the bag size nobody tells you

A 13-gallon kitchen bag in a 2.6-gallon can is a comedy of folded plastic, and the overhang is worse in an RV because the can is usually wedged somewhere the excess can catch. You want 4-gallon liners for the 2.6 and 2.7-gallon cans, and small grocery bags genuinely work in the Sterilite - the manufacturer lists it for a 4-gallon liner or a standard shopping bag, which is the useful kind of honesty.

Buy liners in a size you can restock on the road: 4-gallon bathroom bags are in every supermarket and every campground store, and a coded liner is not. Trash can liners vs trash bags explains the difference, and why your trash bag doesn't fit covers the sizing arithmetic.

The two we would put in a camper: the 7-inch damped step can for an open galley, and the small Sterilite pair for cabinet duty with a spare in the garage bay.

Living with it on the road

  • Empty it before you drive, every time. It takes a minute and it removes the whole problem of a lid opening in motion.
  • Bungee the lid on travel days. Cheap, reversible, and it also stops the can sliding if you run the cord to a cabinet handle.
  • Keep the food fraction cold, not covered. Scraps in a sealed bag in the freezer or the ice box until disposal. This is the single biggest difference you can make to how an RV smells.
  • Wash the can, not just the bucket. In a small space the film under the lid rim is what you smell. How to clean a trash can has the order of operations, and the inner buckets on these picks lift out so it is a two-minute job.
  • Carry a second can for recycling if you boondock. Two 2.7-gallon cans beat one 5-gallon when the recycling has to be kept separate for days - which is why we picked a two-pack.

Common questions

What is the best trash can for an RV?

The Clorox Slim 2.6 Gallon Step Trash Can. It is 7 inches wide with a damped, stay-open lid and a removable inner bucket, which is the right combination for a galley gap and a dump-station routine.

What size trash can fits in an RV?

Choose by width rather than gallons. Most usable RV spots are 6 to 9 inches wide, which puts you in the 2 to 4-gallon class. A 13-gallon can only fits a few rigs, and the bag overhang is a problem in all of them.

How do you stop an RV trash can smelling?

Keep the wet food fraction out of it - bag scraps and keep them in the freezer or ice box until disposal. No can fixes RV trash smell; separating the food does.

How do you keep a trash can from sliding or opening while driving?

Empty it before you drive, put it against a cabinet face or inside one, and run a bungee over the lid to a fixed handle. A free-hinged lid will open over a speed bump.

What size bags fit a small RV trash can?

Four-gallon bathroom liners for the 2.6 and 2.7-gallon cans - and a standard grocery bag genuinely works in the Sterilite, which the manufacturer lists as an option.

Are collapsible RV trash cans any good?

We have not found one we would recommend. They hold a liner poorly and rarely have a lid that seals, which is the feature that matters most in a small sealed space.

Lid & Liner covers one category and tries to cover it completely.
