Pull-Out & Slim Cans

The best trash cans for an office

Office waste is paper and packaging, not food, which changes what the right can looks like. Five picks from a 2-gallon under-desk basket to a 32-gallon break room container, and why open tops win here.

The short answer

For a desk, buy an open-top basket - the Umbra Skinny at 2 gallons if the gap is narrow, the Umbra Vento at 16.5 gallons if it is a shared bin for a room. For a kitchenette or break area, the simplehuman 50L Slim Open Top is the one to have, and for a genuine office break room the Rubbermaid BRUTE 32 is what the category actually runs on. Office waste is dry, so the lid you would insist on in a kitchen is mostly in your way here.

That is the whole insight, and it is why office can guides that recommend kitchen cans get it wrong. A lid exists to contain odor and keep pests out of food waste. A bin that takes paper, envelopes, packaging and the occasional coffee cup has almost no odor to contain, and a lid on it just means one more motion between you and throwing something away - which in practice means things end up on the desk.

How we picked

We ranked on what the bin is for rather than on build quality alone: capacity matched to a realistic emptying interval, whether it can be emptied without lifting it, and whether the opening is wide enough to take the thing office workers throw away most - a crumpled sheet of paper and a cardboard box. Methodology, disclosure.

The criteria that moved the order: a lift-off rim or a liner cinch, because an office bin gets emptied by someone in a hurry; a body that does not dent, because it gets kicked under desks; a footprint that works against a wall or in a kneehole; and, for anything in a shared space, whether a standard bag fits so that whoever restocks the supply closet is not buying a special size.

We excluded sensor cans here. They are a reasonable kitchen product but an odd office one: batteries in a bin nobody owns do not get changed, and the motor is solving a hygiene problem that paper waste does not have.

The picks in full

simplehuman 50L Slim Open Top Can

01 — Best open-top

simplehuman 50L Slim Open Top Can

Heavy-gauge stainless with no lid and no pedal, for the spot where speed matters more than odor containment.

Capacity
50 liters / 13.2 gallons
Lid
None — open top
Material
Commercial-grade heavy-gauge stainless steel
Bag change
Lift-off rim

Every step can eventually fails at the pedal or the hinge. This one cannot, because it has neither. Heavy-gauge steel resists denting in a hallway or a busy prep area, the narrow footprint keeps it out of walkways, and the lift-off rim means bag changes take seconds.

What we'd flag: an open can does nothing about smell and nothing about flies. Do not put this where food waste goes — put it where paper and packaging go.

Umbra Vento Open Top Kitchen Trash Can, 16.5 Gallon

02 — Best large open can

Umbra Vento Open Top Kitchen Trash Can, 16.5 Gallon

A 16.5-gallon open-top bin for a utility room, workshop or garage, where volume beats containment.

Capacity
16.5 gallons / 62 liters
Dimensions
14.6" L x 14.6" W x 30" H
Lid
None — open top
Bag
Integrated neck ring conceals the liner
Material
BPA-free polypropylene with brushed metal accents

Open cans get a bad press because people put food in them. Put packaging, offcuts or yard waste in one and the lack of a lid is purely an advantage — nothing to lift, nothing to break, and you can drop things in one-handed from across the room.

What we'd flag: 16.5 gallons is bigger than a standard 13-gallon bag. You will need oversized liners, and this trips people up constantly.

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

03 — Best small step can

simplehuman 16L Mini Step Can

A proper step can at 16 liters — damped lid, steel pedal, and a footprint that fits beside a dorm desk or under a counter.

Capacity
16 liters / 4.3 gallons
Lid
Soft-close, damped
Pedal
Steel
Body
Stainless steel

Small bins almost universally use a sprung flap that clacks and eventually stops latching. This is the same damped mechanism simplehuman puts in its kitchen cans, scaled down, which matters most in a room where you also sleep. Sixteen liters is about right for one person emptying twice a week, and the closed lid keeps the room's smell down between trips to the hall chute.

What we'd flag: simplehuman sizes its liners by code letter, and a generic bag in a can this small overhangs badly. Either buy the coded liner or accept the fold.

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

04 — Best narrow small can

Umbra Skinny Trash Can, 2 Gallon

Six and a half inches wide, which is the number that matters when the only space is between the toilet and the wall.

Capacity
2 gallons
Dimensions
13.5" x 6.5" x 13"
Material
Polypropylene
Handle
Integrated

Almost every small bin is round, and a round bin in a rectangular gap wastes most of it. This is a genuine slot-filler at 13.5" x 6.5" x 13", with rounded internal corners so liquid does not get trapped and an integrated handle so you can lift it out one-handed.

What we'd flag: no lid. In a bathroom that is usually fine; anywhere food goes, it is not.

Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE 32 Gallon Vented Container

05 — Best for bag removal

Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE 32 Gallon Vented Container

The commercial standard, and the only can here that solves the vacuum-stuck bag properly.

Capacity
32 gallons
Venting
Molded channels — liners up to 50% easier to remove
Bag retention
Integrated cinches
Lid
Flat top with snap-lock, separate part
Base
Heavy-duty reinforced
Standards
NSF 2 and 21; USDA Meat and Poultry listed

Anyone who has fought a wet bag out of a smooth-sided can knows the problem: suction. Rubbermaid molds venting channels into the BRUTE's walls that let air in behind the bag, and states liners come out up to 50% more easily as a result. Integrated cinches let you tie the bag to the handles without knotting it. It meets NSF 2 and 21 and is USDA Meat and Poultry listed, which tells you the surface genuinely cleans.

What we'd flag: no wheels and no attached lid at this size. The snap-lock lid holds, but it is a separate part — which means it is a part that gets left on the ground and blows down the street.

Size it by who empties it

Office bin sizing is unusual in that the limiting factor is almost never volume - it is how often somebody walks past with a bag. Set the size from the emptying interval and work backwards.

WhereSizeEmptied
Under a desk, one person2-4 gallonWeekly; paper only
Home office, shared7-16 gallonWeekly to fortnightly
Beside a printer13-16 gallonWeekly; mostly paper, bulky
Kitchenette13 gallonDaily or every other day - this one has food in it
Break room32 gallonDaily; the only bin here that needs a lid
Recycling station32 gallon, separateWeekly; bulky and dry

Two rows deserve emphasis. The kitchenette bin is the only one in a typical office that contains food, and it should be treated like a kitchen can - lid, liner changed daily, filter if it has a housing. And the break room bin is the one that gets blamed for the smell of the whole floor, usually because it is sized for a day and emptied every other one. Odor is a time problem.

The two bins that cover most of an office between them: a narrow basket for a kneehole, and a commercial-gauge open top for the shared space.

Paper, recycling and the shredder

One stream per bin, always

Mixed-use office bins are where recycling programmes go to die. If paper and food share a bin, the paper is contaminated and the whole bag goes to landfill. Two bins side by side with obvious openings beat one clever bin with a divider nobody reads.

Paper is bulky, not heavy

A 16-gallon bin of loose paper weighs very little, which is why you can run a bigger bin in an office than in a kitchen without making it unliftable. It also means paper bins look full long before they are - flattening boxes doubles the useful capacity of a printer-side bin.

Shredder waste is its own problem

Shredded paper escapes bags, blows around, and jams the vacuum. It wants a bin with a liner that is cinched or tied rather than draped, and it wants emptying straight into the building's paper stream rather than being decanted twice.

Confidential waste is not a trash can question

If documents need destroying, that is a locked console and a shredding service, not a bin with a lid. A standard office can with a lid offers no security at all, and treating it as if it does is the actual risk.

The home office in particular

A home office bin has one requirement the corporate version does not: you are the person who empties it, and you will not do it often. That argues for a bigger bin than feels right - 7 to 16 gallons rather than 2 to 4 - and for an open top, because the thing that stops you using a bin is friction.

It also argues against putting food in it. The reason home office bins smell is the coffee cup and the lunch plate scrapings, and the fix is not a better bin but a rule: food goes to the kitchen can. If that rule will not hold in your house, buy a small can with a lid and a filter housing for the office and keep it emptied. Cans built around odor control.

If the office doubles as a spare room and the bin has to look like furniture, the open-top stainless and resin baskets in this list are the ones that do. If it has to disappear entirely, a cabinet or a desk-side pull-out is the answer instead. Slim and narrow cans.

Common questions

What is the best trash can for an office?

For a desk, an open-top basket - the Umbra Skinny if the space is narrow. For a shared office or kitchenette, the simplehuman 50L Slim Open Top. For a break room, the Rubbermaid BRUTE 32 with a lid, because that is the one bin with food in it.

What size trash can is best for an office?

Two to four gallons under a single desk, 7 to 16 gallons for a shared room or beside a printer, 13 gallons in a kitchenette, and 32 gallons in a break room. Set the size from how often it gets emptied rather than from the volume of waste.

Does an office trash can need a lid?

Only where there is food waste - the kitchenette and the break room. Paper and packaging produce almost no odor, and a lid on a desk bin adds friction that results in rubbish staying on the desk.

What is the best trash can for a home office?

A larger open-top bin than you think you need, in the 7 to 16 gallon range, because you are the one emptying it and you will not do it weekly. Keep food out of it and it will never smell.

Should an office have separate recycling bins?

Yes, and side by side rather than divided within one bin. One stream per container is the only arrangement that survives contact with people in a hurry; a contaminated paper bag goes to landfill in full.

How often should office bins be emptied?

Desk and paper bins weekly. Anything containing food - kitchenette and break room - daily, or every other day at the outside. Odor is driven by how long waste sits, not by how full the bin is.
