The short answer

For a kitchen can, a carbon filter or pod in the lid, because that is where the odor collects. For an outdoor cart, a baking soda powder over each bag, because a pod in that volume of air does nothing. If you dislike fragrance, a plant-oil sachet is the fragrance-free option.

Most commercial products are a blend, which is why reading the mechanism rather than the marketing matters. Arm & Hammer's trash deodorizer, for instance, is baking soda plus an odor-fighting fragrance — the baking soda does real work and the fragrance is noticeable, and whether that is a feature depends entirely on you.

The outdoor row is the one people get wrong most often. A pod designed for a 50-liter kitchen headspace is meaningless in a 240-liter cart standing in the open, and a powder applied to the surface of each bag as it goes in works where the odor is actually being generated. The free options, honestly assessed

We would rather you tried these first, because several of them work and all of them cost nothing.

  • Plain baking soda in the base of the can. Genuinely effective on acidic odors, costs almost nothing, no fragrance. This is the same active ingredient as the commercial powder without the perfume. Replace it monthly.
  • Freezing food scraps until collection day. Not a deodorizer at all, and the most effective thing in this list. Frozen waste does not decompose, so there is no odor to treat.
  • Newspaper in the base. Absorbs liquid before it dries into residue on the can. Old-fashioned, cheap, and it addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
  • A few drops of essential oil on a cotton pad under the lid. This is masking, so it has the same limitations as any fragrance — but it costs nothing and some people genuinely prefer it.
  • Leaving the can in sunlight after washing. UV is a real disinfectant and drying removes the damp bacteria need. Free, and it is part of the cleaning method.

If those do not do it, then buy something — and buy based on the mechanism table above rather than the claims on the front of the packet.
