Soft-close is the feature people underrate before they own it and refuse to give up afterwards. An undamped lid falls shut with a bang that carries through an open-plan floor, and that bang - not a broken pedal - is why most kitchen cans get replaced.

How a soft-close lid actually works

There are three mechanisms sold under the same words, and they are not equivalent.

  • A gas or oil damper on the hinge. A sealed piston resists the lid's travel through the last part of its arc. This is the real thing: it is a serviceable mechanical part, it behaves the same cold or warm, and it is what simplehuman calls Lid Shox.
  • A friction hinge. A nylon bushing sized to drag against the pin. Cheap, quiet enough when new, and the first thing to wear - the lid gradually goes from gliding to dropping over a year or two.
  • A geared or sprung slow-close. A small spring and a geartrain meter the descent. Common in the mid-range, usually fine, and noticeably slower to close than a damper.

The specification sheet rarely tells you which one you are buying. The tells: a brand that names its damper has one; a brand that publishes a pedal cycle rating has a mechanism it is willing to stand behind; and a can with a long guarantee covering the lid - Brabantia states ten years on the Bo - is one where the hinge is expected to outlive the finish.

The picks in full

simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can with Liner Pocket

01 — Best overall

simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can with Liner Pocket

The kitchen can that solves bag fit properly, with a pedal rated for 150,000 steps and a liner pocket that ends the hunt for the box under the sink.

Capacity
45 liters / 11.9 gallons
Liner code
Code Q
Pedal rating
150,000 steps (manufacturer figure)
Lid
Soft-close, damped (Lid Shox)
Body
Brushed stainless steel or dent-proof plastic
Inner bucket
None — liner pocket instead, so more usable volume

Two things separate this from everything at half the price. The first is the liner pocket: a slot inside the can that stores the roll and dispenses the next bag as you pull the full one out. The second is that simplehuman publishes a code letter for each can and sells a liner cut to that exact size, so the bag sits flush instead of hanging four inches over the rim. The steel pedal is rated at 150,000 steps and the Lid Shox damper closes it slowly and silently rather than letting it clap shut.

What we'd flag: the custom-fit liners are the point, and they cost meaningfully more per bag than a supermarket box. A generic 13-gallon bag physically works but undoes the tidiest thing about the can. Budget for the liners or buy something else.

EKO Madison 13.2 Gallon Step Trash Can

02 — Best budget stainless

EKO Madison 13.2 Gallon Step Trash Can

The stainless step can that competes on the one spec that actually predicts lifespan — pedal cycles — without the premium-brand markup.

Capacity
13.2 gallons / 50 liters
Pedal rating
200,000+ steps (manufacturer figure)
Lid
Soft-close
Inner bucket
Raised, with handles
Bag compatibility
Standard 13-gallon bags

EKO states the pedal mechanism is tested past 200,000 steps, a higher published figure than several cans costing more. You also get a soft-close lid and a raised inner bucket with handles, so bag changes do not involve reaching down into the body of the can. It takes standard 13-gallon bags.

What we'd flag: EKO's published warranty and parts support are thinner than Kohler's or Brabantia's. If the pedal linkage does fail, replacement is less straightforward than with brands that stock spares.

Kohler 13-Gallon Stainless Steel Step Trash Can (K-20940)

03 — Best value stainless

Kohler 13-Gallon Stainless Steel Step Trash Can (K-20940)

The premium-feeling stainless can that does not lock you into proprietary liners — it is built around the standard 13-gallon bag.

Capacity
13 gallons
Bag compatibility
Standard 13-gallon bags
Lid
Slow-close, stay-open
Pedal
Metal
Bag retention
Interior ring
Finish
White stainless steel, fingerprint proof (20940-STW)

Kohler states this fits all 13-gallon garbage bags, and that is the whole argument for it over the simplehuman. You get a robust metal pedal, a slow-close lid that also stays open when you need both hands, an interior ring that holds the bag by the rim, and a fingerprint-resistant finish — without a liner subscription. For most households that is the right trade.

What we'd flag: a standard 13-gallon bag in a 13-gallon can still overhangs, because bag sizing is nominal rather than dimensional. The interior ring hides it, but the bag is still bigger than the can.

Brabantia Bo Touch Bin, 36 L

04 — Best warranty

Brabantia Bo Touch Bin, 36 L

A touch-open bin with a ten-year guarantee and a removable inner bucket, built to sit flat against a wall.

Capacity
36 liters / 9.5 gallons
Guarantee
10 years (manufacturer)
Opening
Soft-touch lid panel
Inner bucket
Removable plastic
Feet
Adjustable, non-slip
Lid
Large opening, stays open

Brabantia guarantees the Bo for ten years, the longest published guarantee in the mainstream category, and that tells you something about how they expect the mechanism to age. There is no pedal at all — you press the lid panel — so there is no linkage to wear out. Adjustable non-skid legs let you level it on an uneven floor, and the inner bucket lifts straight out.

What we'd flag: no pedal means no hands-free opening. If your hands are usually full or greasy when you go to the bin, a touch lid is a step backwards from a pedal, whatever the guarantee says.

Amazon Basics 13.2 Gallon (50 L) Soft-Close Step Trash Can

05 — Best cheap soft-close

Amazon Basics 13.2 Gallon (50 L) Soft-Close Step Trash Can

The cheapest way to get a genuinely damped lid: a 50-liter brushed stainless step can with a removable inner bucket.

Capacity
13.2 gallons / 50 liters
Lid
Soft-close
Pedal
Foot lever
Inner bucket
Removable
Finish
Smudge-resistant brushed stainless
Dimensions
14.8" x 16.7" x 25.9"

A soft-close lid is the feature that decides whether a can is tolerable in an open-plan kitchen, and it is normally the first thing budget cans drop. This keeps it, adds a smudge-resistant finish so the fingerprints are less obvious, and uses a removable inner bucket so a leaked bag does not sit against the steel. It takes standard 13-gallon liners.

What we'd flag: the pedal has no published cycle rating, and no rating usually means the manufacturer does not want to print one. Treat this as a three-to-five year can rather than a ten-year one.

How we picked

We have not cycled these lids on a test rig. What we compared was the mechanism each manufacturer describes, the cycle rating it publishes for the pedal and hinge, the guarantee attached to them, and whether the damping sits on the lid, the pedal or both. Methodology, disclosure.

Two of the five do something slightly different and earn their places for it. The Kohler uses a metal pedal with a slow-close, stay-open lid, which is the detail that matters when you are scraping a plate. The Brabantia Bo has no pedal at all - you press the lid panel - which removes the pedal linkage from the failure list entirely.

We ranked on longevity over quietness, because every can here is quiet on day one. The order reflects which mechanism we would expect to still be damping after five years of twenty opens a day.

What a damper is worth, in plain terms

SituationDoes soft-close matter?Why
Open-plan kitchen and living roomYes, more than any other featureThe bang travels; the can is always in earshot
Kitchen under a bedroomYesLate-night and early-morning opens are the problem
Apartment with thin floorsYesLid noise transmits through structure, not just air
Garage or utility roomNoNobody is listening; spend the money on capacity
Outdoor or curbside canNoA damper is a liability in freezing temperatures
Bathroom canSometimesSmall lids are light enough that the bang is minor

The last two rows are worth a sentence. Dampers contain fluid or gas, and in an unheated space the resistance changes with temperature - a lid that settles indoors at 70 degrees can stick half-open in a cold garage. That is a reason to put an undamped can in the garage rather than a reason to avoid dampers. Garage cans, which have different priorities.

The two ends of the category: the best damper sold in a kitchen can, and the cheapest one we would actually live with.

When a soft-close lid stops being soft

It is almost always the hinge, not the damper

A damper fails gradually and quietly; a hinge fails suddenly. If the lid went from settling to slamming overnight, look at the hinge pin and the lid mount before you blame the piston. On most cans the lid lifts off, and a bent mount can be straightened.

Grease is the other culprit

Kitchen aerosol settles on everything, and a film of cooking grease on a friction hinge changes its drag. A wipe along the hinge line with a degreaser restores more lids than people expect. What to clean a can with.

An overfull bag is not a lid fault

If the lid will not close the last half inch, the liner is proud of the rim and the lid is landing on trash. This is the most common broken soft-close there is, and the fix is a correctly sized bag. Bag sizes, explained.

The pedal is a separate mechanism

A quiet lid and a working pedal are two different parts, and the pedal is the one that carries the load. If yours has stopped lifting the lid at all, that is a linkage problem rather than a damper problem. What to do when the pedal stops working.

Common questions

What is the best soft close trash can?

The simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can. Its Lid Shox damper is a sealed mechanical part rather than a friction hinge, and simplehuman publishes a 150,000-step rating for the pedal that drives it.

Is a soft close trash can worth it?

In any kitchen that is open to a living space or sits under a bedroom, yes - it is the feature people notice daily. In a garage or outdoors it is not worth paying for, and in cold spaces a damper can work against you.

What is the difference between soft close and slow close?

Slow close means the lid descends gradually, usually via a spring and gears. Soft close means a damper absorbs the energy at the end of the arc so the lid settles rather than lands. Listings use the terms loosely; the mechanism is what to look for.

Why has my soft close trash can started slamming?

Usually the hinge rather than the damper - a bent lid mount or a worn pin. Check that first, then clean cooking grease off the hinge line, then check whether the bag is sitting proud of the rim and stopping the lid short.

Do soft close lids reduce trash can smell?

Indirectly. A damped lid seats fully every time rather than bouncing, and a lid that seats is a lid that holds odor in. It is a smaller effect than a carbon filter but it is real.

Can you fix a soft close trash can lid?

Often, yes. Lid mounts, hinge pins and whole lids are sold as spare parts by several of these brands, and a lid swap costs a fraction of a new can.
