The best simplehuman trash cans

Six models ranked by the kitchen each one belongs in. The top pick is the 45L Rectangular Step Can with the liner pocket, and the code letter inside the rim matters more than the finish.

The short answer

Buy the simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can with Liner Pocket if you want one can to be the right can for a decade — it is the model the rest of the range is measured against. Buy the 58L Sensor Can only if touchless is the specific thing you are paying for. Every other model here is a shape answer rather than a better can: slim for a gap, under-counter for a cabinet, recycler for two streams, 4.5L for a bathroom.

How we picked

We have not lived with all six. What we did is rank them against the three things simplehuman does that almost nobody else in the category does — publishes a pedal cycle rating, sells a liner cut to each specific can, and damps the lid as standard rather than as a premium upgrade. A model that uses all three well ranks above one that does not. Methodology, disclosure.

We ignored star ratings and review counts entirely. They are not comparable across retailers and quoting them would imply we had verified them. Every model here is one we confirmed simplehuman currently sells.

We also left models out. The butterfly-lid cans, the open-top bins and the mini recycler are real products that suit specific rooms, and they appear elsewhere on this site where they are the right answer. This page is the six that cover the overwhelming majority of households.

The picks in full

simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can with Liner Pocket

01 — Best overall

simplehuman 45L Rectangular Step Can with Liner Pocket

The kitchen can that solves bag fit properly, with a pedal rated for 150,000 steps and a liner pocket that ends the hunt for the box under the sink.

Capacity
45 liters / 11.9 gallons
Liner code
Code Q
Pedal rating
150,000 steps (manufacturer figure)
Lid
Soft-close, damped (Lid Shox)
Body
Brushed stainless steel or dent-proof plastic
Inner bucket
None — liner pocket instead, so more usable volume

Two things separate this from everything at half the price. The first is the liner pocket: a slot inside the can that stores the roll and dispenses the next bag as you pull the full one out. The second is that simplehuman publishes a code letter for each can and sells a liner cut to that exact size, so the bag sits flush instead of hanging four inches over the rim. The steel pedal is rated at 150,000 steps and the Lid Shox damper closes it slowly and silently rather than letting it clap shut.

What we'd flag: the custom-fit liners are the point, and they cost meaningfully more per bag than a supermarket box. A generic 13-gallon bag physically works but undoes the tidiest thing about the can. Budget for the liners or buy something else.

simplehuman 58L Sensor Can

02 — Best touchless overall

simplehuman 58L Sensor Can

The touchless can that gets the sensor right — it reads how long you are standing there rather than running a fixed timer.

Capacity
58 liters / 15.3 gallons
Opening
Adaptive motion sensor plus voice control
Power
Battery
Finishes
Brushed, white, black

The failure mode of cheap sensor cans is the lid closing while your hand is still over the opening. simplehuman's adaptive sensor holds the lid while it still sees you, and that single behavior is what separates a can you stop noticing from one that annoys you daily. Voice control ("open can") is a genuine convenience when both hands are full, not a gimmick.

What we'd flag: it is the most expensive way to solve this problem by a wide margin, and every sensor can is a battery consumable and an electronics failure point that a step can is not.

simplehuman 58L Step Recycler

03 — Best dual-compartment overall

simplehuman 58L Step Recycler

The cleanest answer to trash-plus-recycling in one unit: two compartments behind a single lid and a single pedal.

Total capacity
58 liters / 15.3 gallons
Compartments
Two, behind a single lid
Lid
Soft-close, damped

Most dual-compartment cans make you choose which side to open. This one opens both at once, which sounds trivial until you are holding a rinsed can in one hand and a wrapper in the other. The split is asymmetric on some configurations, which is correct — most households generate more recycling than trash, not an even fifty-fifty.

What we'd flag: two compartments means two liners, and the compartments take different liner codes. Read the code letters molded inside before you order bags, or you will buy the wrong size twice.

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

04 — Best narrow full-size can

simplehuman 45L Slim Step Can

Full kitchen capacity in a can narrow enough to live in the gap beside a fridge or at the end of a run of cabinets.

Capacity
45 liters / 11.9 gallons
Shape
Slim — deep rather than wide
Lid
Soft-close

The trick is that the volume goes back rather than sideways — it is deep, not wide. If the only free floor space in your kitchen is a narrow slot, this is one of very few cans that gives you a genuine 45 liters there rather than forcing you down to a 30-liter bin.

What we'd flag: a narrow, deep can tips more easily than a wide one when the lid is open and you lean on it. Push it against a wall rather than leaving it free-standing.

simplehuman 30L Under-Counter Pull-Out Can

05 — Best single-bucket pull-out

simplehuman 30L Under-Counter Pull-Out Can

The single-bucket version, for a household that recycles elsewhere and wants all the cabinet volume for trash.

Capacity
30 liters / 8 gallons
Frame
Heavy-duty steel
Tracks
Commercial-grade ball bearing
Liner code
Code G

A dual-compartment pull-out is the wrong product if your recycling goes into an outdoor crate — you end up with a half-size trash can for no reason. This gives you the full 30 liters in one bucket on the same heavy-duty steel frame and commercial ball-bearing tracks, hidden inside the cabinet.

What we'd flag: the same cabinet-depth constraint applies, and there is no way to add a second bucket later. Decide before you drill.

simplehuman 4.5L Round Step Can

06 — Best small bathroom can

simplehuman 4.5L Round Step Can

A proper step can shrunk to bathroom size, with the same damped lid rather than the sprung flap most small bins use.

Capacity
4.5 liters / 1.2 gallons
Lid
Soft-close, damped
Mechanism
Foot pedal

Small bathroom bins almost all use a cheap sprung lid that snaps shut loudly and eventually stops latching. This uses the same damped mechanism as the kitchen cans at a fraction of the volume. In a bathroom that shares a wall with a bedroom, quiet is not a luxury feature.

What we'd flag: 4.5 liters is genuinely small. If your bathroom bin takes diapers or a household's worth of cotton pads, you will be emptying it daily.

The liner code is the running cost

Every simplehuman can carries a code letter, and the company sells a liner cut to that code. The liner is not a marketing accessory — it is the reason the can looks the way it does when the lid is open. A fitted liner sits flush under the rim with no overhang, no slumping, and no four inches of plastic flapping over the outside of a $200 can. A generic bag physically works and undoes exactly that.

So the honest way to price a simplehuman is as a can plus a subscription. Over five years the liners are a real line item, and for some households they are the reason to buy something else. We did that arithmetic in full on is simplehuman worth it.

Liner codeCut forWhat it is for
Code Q50-65 L / 13-17 gal cansThe big rectangular and semi-round kitchen cans
Code J30-45 L / 8-12 gal cansMid-size kitchen and slim cans
Code G30 L / 8 gal cansUnder-counter and pull-out cans
Generic 13-gal bagNominally anythingWorks, overhangs, and wastes the liner pocket
Read the code molded inside your can's rim rather than guessing from the capacity — the code is cut to the can's shape, not just its volume.

If you would rather not be tied to a code at all, that is a legitimate reason to buy a Kohler or an EKO instead, both of which take ordinary tall kitchen bags. Fitted liners versus standard bags, in full.

Two of those rows have cheaper answers that are nearly as good, and we would rather say so. A sensor can from iTouchless or Ninestars does the same job for a fraction of the money with a less forgiving sensor — the touchless roundup ranks them all. And in a bathroom, a 4.5-liter can is a lovely object and a very expensive one. The bathroom roundup has the alternatives.

What the money actually buys

A pedal with a number attached to it

simplehuman states 150,000 steps for its pedal mechanisms. That figure is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent test result, and at twenty opens a day it works out to roughly twenty years, which no kitchen can actually survives. Treat it as evidence of intent: a brand willing to print a cycle number is a brand that expects the linkage to outlast the finish. EKO prints a higher one, which is a fair point against simplehuman and one we make on the EKO comparison.

A lid that does not clap

Every can here has a damped lid. In an open-plan kitchen, or a galley under a bedroom, lid noise is the single most common reason a perfectly working can gets replaced early. A damper is a real mechanical part and it is the first thing deleted from a budget can.

A liner pocket, on the models that have one

The pocket stores the liner roll inside the can and dispenses the next bag as you lift the full one out. It sounds like a gimmick and it is the feature owners mention first, because it removes the one annoying part of taking the trash out — the bit where you are holding a dripping bag and hunting under the sink with your other hand.

What it does not buy

A published warranty length. simplehuman does not state one on the product pages we checked, and Brabantia publishes ten years on the Bo range. We are not going to quote a figure the manufacturer has not published, and if a long written guarantee is what you want, Brabantia is the honest answer.

Common questions

What is the best simplehuman trash can?

The 45L Rectangular Step Can with the liner pocket. It is the model that uses all three of simplehuman's real advantages at once - a rated steel pedal, a damped lid and a liner cut to the can - and 45 liters suits the largest number of kitchens.

Do you have to use simplehuman liners?

No. A generic tall kitchen bag fits well enough to work. What you lose is the flush fit under the rim and the point of the liner pocket, which is most of what you paid extra for.

Which simplehuman can is best for a bathroom?

The 4.5L Round Step Can. It uses the same damped pedal mechanism as the kitchen cans at bathroom scale, which matters most in a bathroom that shares a wall with a bedroom.

Is the sensor can better than the step can?

Not better, different. The sensor can opens without a foot and is the right answer if you handle raw food or have your hands full constantly. It is also a battery consumable and an electronics failure point that a step can is not.

What does the code letter on a simplehuman can mean?

It identifies which custom-fit liner the can takes. The code is molded inside the rim. Read it there rather than inferring it from the capacity, because the liners are cut to the can's shape as well as its volume.

How long does a simplehuman trash can last?

Longer than the category average, but nobody including simplehuman publishes a warranty length, so we will not invent one. The part that fails is the pedal linkage, usually because liquid has run down into it - wiping the pedal channel at every bag change does more for lifespan than the brand on the lid.
